well doc, i did it. after many grueling hours (days?) i finally got my sys to rip and burn a dvd to vcd. in tmpgenc, i loaded the ntcs or whatever film preset, and did dolby dig downmix and set dolby quality to high and basically did everythig that i read in your EXCELLENT guides. when i went to burn with nero, though, at the beginning of the burn process, it said something like invalid format, and gave me the option to disable standard compatibility and continue anyway, which i did. basically, it is a decent burn, runs fine on my apex stand alone, but there are two things 1)after fast fowarding, the picture is COMPLETELY pixelized and unwatchable. this does not resolve and i need to restart the player. and 2)there is still a fair amount of mild pixelation in the film, nothing unwatchable, but somewhat annoying. is there anyway i can tweak my encoding process to give me the absolute best picture quality i can get??
p.s: the sound quality is AWESOME, no probs there. thanks for your help. your site is THE BEST ON THE WEB!!

VCD format doesn't really give you much options, because you can't increase the bitrate nor use VBR encoding for the video, so only option you can have is to tweak with the settings a little bit, but this really requires in-depth understanding of the MPEG-1 video -- you can read more from here:

http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgencexplained.htm

...and as for playback problems after FF, this is because of your player's firmware and it doesn't have anything to do with the VCD itself. You might ask from Apex if they have an update available for your firmware.

...and thanks ;-)

Ok thanks doc, as for the firmware upgrade, i think i may pass as i have one of the elusive 600a's with the loophole menu, much to my delight! although i did read that you can retro mod the new firmware with a mod chip, so maybe i can get the best of both worlds !->

I _has_ Apex AD600a as well -- the DVD-ROM overheated and I had to replace the internal drive with Toshiba DVD-ROM and that overheated as well and **cked up some more important parts inside the device :-)

But yeah, you can have dual firmware -- just get the other EPROM and flash the new bios on it and create a switch to your device so you can switch the correct firmware (you watch regular region 1 movies/VCD/SVCD, use the new one -- you watch region 2, 4, etc movies, use the old one).
