Paramount will provide $10 rebate on titles upgraded to Blu-ray

article published on 16 August, 2008

The rebate value is $10, and will be offered for select Paramount and DreamWorks titles. you already own the media what's the point, all i can say is "money for old rope"

lets sell them the same media we have already sold them twice, thus far, yes we can dupe them 3 times into the hype of a new format just to sell them media we have already made and paid for, WOW, we can make a stack of cash off of.

I kinda agree with you 13thHouR, since in order to get the rebate, you must first buy a BD movie that includes a certificate, which must be filled and mailed along with its proof-of-purchase tab and receipt, and the proof-of-purchase tab from the DVD version for the same movie... is it worth cannibalizing covers from BD and DVD movies you already own, so you can get a US$10 rebate?

Even worse, I'm sure there's a lot of consumers worldwide, even within USA, that own Paramount and Dreamworks DVD titles that don't have proof-of-purchase tabs, specially when they're issued in steelbooks or collector's cases, which was the case of recent titles such as Transformers or The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration.

Also realize that US licensed distributors have a different manner to approach consumers, than international licensed distributors. For instance, if you live in USA and buy a DVD movie that shows some authoring problem, distributors offer replacement discs for those who request them, but consumers in other parts of the world, don't get such benefits nor attentions, rather their complaints are ignored.

Yet I'm sure that a lot of BD backers will praise this as a great deal, but for once try to be objective, that such rebate could only benefit US consumers, at the expense of butchering their DVD and BD covers, and let's be realistic, it's pointless if people around the world can't benefit from it as well. If they seek to strengh Blu-ray's niche market within USA, this may help them, but as for achieving worldwide mainstream market certanly not.

Yea right! Like any kid would be interested in buying The Godfather movies, Sweeney Todd or Zodiac, and no doubt anyone seeks to buy movies in pristine condition, not with butchered covers... and before you say that might buy Transformers, by now anyone that liked that movie, surely already owns it.

One wonders what might have happened had Paramount offered people $10 to swap their BR discs for HD when the format was viable. Same result, just would've taken longer.

Pretty much academic for both formats at this late date. Blu Ray's failing.

I liked that movie and i still havent owned it simply because ive been waiting for the blu-ray version all along. Since that movie first came out on HD-DVD i felt it was going to lose to Blu-ray and so i just waited til this moment at last :P

mspurloc, i totally agree with you, if BD was as succesfull as they insist to claim, there'll be no need to offer such rebates. Sorry Vr0cK, but your case has nothing to do with the scenario described in this article, which is that you buy "a movie" on BD when you already own it on DVD.

@ ematrix, whao easyyy there. I was just a simple comment on what you said earlier because you assumed that anybody that liked Transformer would already own the movie, thus, no need to buy the blu-ray version, cause of course you're dead wrong since im one that likes the movie and doesnt own it yet. My case may not have anything to do with this article but it does to your comment so next time if you want comments to be strickly for the article then comment only about the article. Re-read what i quoted of you earlier and tell me if thats not related to what i said earlier. And its not like my comment offened anybody so who cares.

@ Vr0cK, you're the one that should re-read the comments, and then you could realize that your comment had nothing to do with our comments nor the article itself. First of all the rebate is for those who buy the BD version of a movie when they already own it on DVD; if you choosed to hold for the BD version of these movies, good for you, but that's not the case this article nor we're talking about.

When lxfactor suggested that you could sell the DVD versions of those movies to some kids, I replied: "Like any kid would be interested in buying The Godfather movies, Sweeney Todd or Zodiac, and no doubt anyone seeks to buy movies in pristine condition, not with butchered covers... and before you say that might buy Transformers, by now anyone that liked that movie, surely already owns it."

Even so I never said that you shouldn't nor need to buy the BD version, my comment was made in the context that you could re-seld the DVD versions of these movies, yet you choose to extract part of my reply and place it out of its original context, to make an alegation that had nothing to do with this article nor what we're talking about.
