ok recently tried to backup a few discs for my girl, after getting the invalid navigation error in shrink, tried DVDFab and it gave "cannot read some data" but gave the option to do 'main movie' - only problem was that not all of the episodes were selectable... so tried AnyDVD and on the laptop (Slimtype DVD A DS8A1P) it had the same problem...

but i tried it on another computer and AnyDVD worked fine!!!

*edit* Originally based on this information I thought there may be an issue or limitation that dealt with my hardware specs on the laptop. After further research it appears that the issue is related to and isolated to 2 discs that are not in the best condition...

You have a Lite-On slimtype DVD writer. I'm sure you know that. ;)

Have you used this device in the past w/o issues? If so was it an "episodic" disc or regular retail disc?

You used AnyDVD on both machines but did you use the same disc you were trying to backup with?? Just making sure. ;)

It seems that your DS8A1P is having issues reading and possibly writing to different media. From what I've read that particular model is very picky when it comes to writing to a blank DVD. I would try some Verbatim 16x DVD+R (MCC 004) media and see what that does for you if you get it to read. ;) btw that's what was recommended. ;)

A firmware update might be in order. What is the f/w now?? CA11, CX12, or CX17?? There is a CS21 but from what I've read it won't help the issues you're having atm. ;)

good luck...

Yes. Burns just fine (for now) and most backups are not a problem...

Yes. The problem series is one of my gf shows, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, personally not a fan. This series started giving problems when we got season six (seasons 1-5 were no problems) - I took the DVD to work and used a computer there to complete the backup...

Reading/Ripping the disc is the issue, writing has not been an issue.
FWIW i use imgburn, seems to burn the best =)

CX12 - according to Nero Info Tool, and it also indicates i should be able to read DL. funny thing is the next disc in the season, wouldnt allow me to rip at work, perhaps its just the fact that its 'used' and the discs are too scratched. I will attempt to locate another copy and test further... but i was worried my drive didnt support dual layer or something... glad i found the nero info tool...

thanks nice reply and answered plenty of questions. lol.

With that last bit of info I'm betting you're having issues with the disc... It's still strange that your "work" computer was willing to do the discs but NOT the next (last) in the set. I'm guessing it's pretty scratched then.... You might give DVDDecrypter (brute force and ignore read errors) a chance if you have something to run with it, RI4M w/ FixVTS. I'm sure the DVD set you're talking about is newer than a few years old. lol. ;)

again good luck. ;)

Yeah, thats what puzzled me. Found a few spare moments and went thru the rest of the season, and got them all backed up besides that one. Its funny but when I tried the remaining discs, the rest of the season went thru without hitch!!! Just those 2 discs had issues, one that ripped @ work on a desktop (which according to Nero Tool has worse specs than my DVD-Drive!!!) and one that wouldnt rip at all!!! I tried DVD Decryptor w/RI4M and still had no luck... Oh and here's another little tidbit - when trying to play the disc (the one that cant be ripped) in VLC on the laptop, it will play 2 episodes only. When trying to play the other episodes it results in a C++ Runtime Error!!! However, the disc plays fine in the DVD Player. Ive been ripping/backing up DVDs for a while now (this site has been a HUGE HELP!!!) and never have i encountered such a puzzling issue...

*edit* Im still not able to understand how that one disc ripped fine @ work on an inferior system, but not on my laptop. And of course, the DVD that i can't rip at all is just irritating!!!

Thanks again for your reply...

Thanks for following up with your "issue". ;) At least you found out it wasn't the DS8A1P. :D Maybe you can find a "friend" that owns that DVD set and borrow the disc that was scratched. ONly thing that I can think of since you own the set and it's "ruined". Sorry for that...

good luck finding a replacement.

PCs differ from machine to machine ,preloaded software with box systems,AV programs,OP systems (windows XP vs Vista,Vista can be a problem) etc. can all cause compatibility problems. its really hard to pinpoint and laptops can be difficult also. I/most in here use custom build machines and have little to no problems ever.

the best program to read bad/scratched DVDs is Intervideo DVD Copy 6,there is a free trial so you might give that a shot. you will need to run anydvd behind the program. or have you tryed using the anydvd ripper? reading the DVD to you're HDD ? other than that you will need to find a good disc
