Samsung MS28 not readable

I just bought a samsung ms28 to replace my hitachi 78fk.
I am not trying to mod the drive, just to put my original key in and spoof the firmware for hitachi
So far I have been unable to read the firmware off the ms28(hence cannot write to it either)
I am using a VIA 6421 chipset card and I used iprep to create a usb bootable flash drive.
when i try and run mktflash after booting to the flash drive the only drive i see that it can flash is a iprep drive and if I choose that drive it does not do anything, just sits there.
What am I doing wrong and can anyone help me figure this out?
Any help would be appreciated.

try giving this a once over for a refreasher on ms-28 drives
