Being a pensioner I have collected a lot of vhs tapes over the years. I've copied most of them on to DVD but there is a few that are copyprotected, and I would really like to get them on to DVD without the expense of buying new ones. I was told that I could do this through the computer, so I purchased a video grabber so far ok but my computer knows that the film is protected and wont burn it on to a DVD. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do it.

Try changing the file format. Usually making it into a .mpg or .avi will remove whatever macrovision garbage is left in it.

Give it a go and report back.. I know people with the same problems sometimes.

Here is a freeware tool to convert between lots of formats.. I don't think it will recognise macrovision protection. http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/

Just a little more info.. my research has found 4 or 5 commonly used versions of the protection as technology developed. I still find the best way is to use a pair of ancient "deadfinger" vhs machines feeding the RF signal from one to the other then capturing from the video/audio out on the second machine.. and losing the protection along the way ;)

thread from a while ago about the same topic http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/333845

and lots to read .. we use mainconcept and a capture card for NTSC4.43 to dvd

I've done that in the past before DVDs, my main video recorder is not very old, and the old one is not quite old enough, they know when I've tried to copy like this, when I've checked the tapes afterwards it has blank bits, and bits that just flash a lot. Thanks anyway.
