Hi, I just bought some new hardware for my pc and I have all my backup software so I thought I should just completely re-install windows and format my hard drive. I had Mcafee which I never really liked and currently I have norton which I like a little bit more because it's lighter than Mcafee.

My question is:

What is the best software for Internet Security, Firewall, Spyware that is the lightest on my system? I don't want parental controls or spam filters for my email and all that other crap that just wastes space. I just want a thorough virus protection, firewall, internet security, and anti-spyware that isn't heavy on my system. What is the best software for this?

Thanks.

I run bitdefender on my system and I find it very good. updates every hour and constantly scans your hard drive and internet to stop anything entering( I chose this as I download a lot of "stuff" )but I've seen others here recommend avg (free download) and zone alarm free, its safe to run both as zone alarm is only a firewall. I've recommended both to friends and they are happy enough.

The lightest fastest software is the free "returnil" , it will defeat all known and unknown malware/virus etc, even the dreaded killdisk virus.

What it does is put your computer ( free version only protects the c: partition) in virtual mode (virtual mode looks and runs like regular mode). In virtual mode nothing is written to the system hard drive, everything is run in memory. Any viruses that get through your antivirus only live in the virtual computer. When you reboot anything that occur while you where in the virtual mode dissappears.

The computer boots up in regular mode so you can perform your updates etc, when you decide to go on the internet just engage "returnil" (this takes less than 2 seconds), to get out of virtual mode you need to reboot.

You still need your firewall and antivirus to protect the virtual computer while it's on the internet but anything that does get through won't cause any permanent damage.

My system
1. zone alarm firewall
2. avg 8.0 free
3. firefox 3.0 browser
4. returnil (I use it as my antispyware,no slowdown)

that's it, I haven't had any virus/malware in over 2 years.
