ok i'm gonna buy a wii next week.
and this will be my first wii so i have no idea how to mod it.
some local dude is modding it for $100 but i want to mod it myself if it's possible.
is it easy to do it? or hard for an average guy?
is there step-by-step instructions with pictures?

and if i mod it, can i play gamecube back up games too?

and even if i mod it, can i play on-line with other people? do i have to pay monthly fee for that?

and how much does it cost if i mod it myself?

If you just getting a new wii. You won't be able to use the wiikey.
The wiikey modchip is only good for the early wiis. You should be look at a D2pro. As of new the D2pro V3 supports all of the wii's drives. Also if you wanted to install it yourself, it is not hard. You can buy the modchip soldered to a wiiclip. And attach it to your drive. No soldering for you to do.

so wiikey is a modchip?
and if nintendo does firmware upgrade in the future, am i screwed? i won't be able to play back-up games?
and why do i have to do the firmware upgrade? if i don't connect my wii to internet, i can still play without firmware upgrading?

Yes a wiikey is a modchip. But like I said, it won't work on new wii's. Because nintendo changed the drive set. So look for the D2pro, it works on the new drive sets.

There is a very small chance that a firmware update will stop the working of your modchip. It has not happen at all so far. Plus some modchips have firmwares of there own, so it can bypass nintendo's new protection.

You don't have to update your wii if you don't want to. But the updates don't affect the modchip. Sometimes updates are need.

Example: Super Smash Brawl update was need so the wii would play Dual Layer games.

Example 2: The Wii Shop update was so you can download and play WiiWare games.

Nintendo puts firmware updates in some wii games for those who can't update their wii's(Because not everyone has internet). And some game will need the updates to play the game. Keep in mind that all the Big Titles are most likely to ask for a firmware update. However your wii will never update automatically, I will ask you first.

When the wii came out, the drive could be hacked by installing a modchip. Like the wiikey. After a while, nintendo change the drive set, therefore a wiikey couldn't be installed due to the lack of soldering points. Then the wiikey team made the D2Ckey modchip, to hack the new drive. Then nintendo change it again, Then another modchip is made for the new changes. And so on.
Bottom line. If you are just getting a wii. Your chip set is going to be a D2C2 or D2E drive. So look for modchips that support those drives.

Yes, you can play online with the wii. Wii online is free and you can use your modchip and backups online without fear of risk.

Over 90% of Modchip sites are fake and a big scam.

1. Modchipsupplier -------Australia

2. Modchipcentral -------Canada

3. Modchip.ca -----------Canada

These are the best and safest places to order from.

Also unless your ordering a "D2Pro9 V3" which supports all the wii drives. I would not advice buying a modchip until you know for sure what type of drive your wii has.

Also if your afraid of soldering. You a see if you can purchase your modchip soldered to a wiiclip. Then all you would have to do is attach it to your drive.

It's a little late, but I'm gonna throw this up anyway. It should answer most of the remaining questions you have.

My generic copypaste newbie answer

Choosing and installing a modchip:

Before choosing a modchip it is important to know what chipset your wii is. Entering your wii's serial number here http://wiitracker.nintendo-scene.com/search.php will give you a pretty good idea what chipset you have. If you cannot do this for some reason then there are a handful of chips that support all chipsets. The wasabi does and the infectus as well (only with the recent update however) There may be others now also, I don't really keep tabs on this particular feature because if you have an older wii then there's not much point spending extra on a more recent modchip when a wiikey will work.

If you have an earlier wii, then a wiikey is probably the way to go. But the Wiikey only works on DMS, D2A and D2B chipsets. If you have a D2C then you need a different modchip. D2Pro, wasabi, argon and infectus, among others, are valid choices. Also, if you have a D2C you don't have to worry about cut pins. Only some D2B chipsets had cut legs. Cut lets made it more difficult to mod the console.

If you are bad at soldering then something to keep in mind is a wii-clip. Solder the clip to your modchip and then you wont have to solder anything to the console. It makes an install MUCH easier, though does have the drawbacks of coming loose and being generally less reliable.

Firmware issues:

At the current time THERE ARE NO WII FIRMWARE UPDATES THAT CAN DETECT MODCHIPS. This may change in the future but for the time being it stands. Some newer games can detect some older modchips (giving error 001) but this can be fixed on some modchips by updating the chip's firmware.

You can safely allow the console to do updates from a game so long and ONLY SO LONG as the game you are updating is from the same region as your console. Updating with a firmware from a different region can brick or semi-brick your console and should never be attempted.

A semi-bricked console can be fixed by running a later update than the one that bricked the console from the proper region. Example: You have a NTSC console at firmware 3.1 and update it with the PAL version of 3.2. The console is now semi-bricked. Games still play but the wii settings cannot be accessed. If you run the NTSC 3.3 firmware it will fix the console.

Questions on firmware 3.3:

Wii firmware 3.3 wet briefly blocked the twilight hack (not gonna explain what that is here, if you don't know search for it) but the hack has been fixed now and will work again. And it blocks truncha signed disks. Truncha disks can still be run by loading them through the gecko OS on the homebrew channel. Scrubbed disks still work (by most accounts). If you want more info on truncha and scrubbed disks search for them. As was said earlier, NO FIRMWARE UPDATES CAN DETECT MODCHIPS, AND THIS INCLUDES FIRMWARE 3.3

Online play:

Online play with a modchip and a backup copy of a game works exactly the same as it does on an unmodded console with an original copy of the game. It works just fine and you won't get banned.

Gamecube Game Backups:

Gamecube game backups can be safely run from any region without fear of bricking because none of them have updates. They can also be burned on normal sized DVDs, and more than 1 can be burned to a single disk using GCOS.

Updating the modchip:

Not all modchips can be updated. There is a very nice for updating the wiikey here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/597460 but some D2C chips cannot be updated. Others lack the ability to update from a DVD and instead use a USB ribbon cable that connects to the PC. Not going to go into all the details here. Again, if you need the info try searching for it.

Burning disk images:

First off is downloading or backing up your games. If you choose to download one you will most likely get a collection of rar files. There's a guide on what to do with them to get the iso file here http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/555919

Backing up your games is a little more complex, but there are 2 ways to go about doing it.

First off remember that most DVD drives cannot read wii disks. In fact, only 4 models of DVD drive can read them, and they can be somewhat hard to track down.

The second option is to use an SD Gecko, its a gamecube memory card with an SD slot. If you have a modded console you can run a homebrew program that will dump an iso of the game in your wii console to the SD card in the Gecko.

Either way, once you have your iso image the process of burning the game is simpler. Any DVD burner will work for burning wii games. Simply load up imgburn or nero and burn your iso file. I recommend burning at 4x to reduce errors. The brand of the disk used is also important. Verbatum DVD-R is preferred by most, but +R is fine as well. Don't bother with the off-brand disks as you'll probably end up with a bunch of coasters.

That concludes the generic copypaste newbie response. It will probably get longer in the future as more newbie questions are asked, but I think that hits most of the basics.

Hi,

From my experience with different chips the D2Pro's are reasonably good, the Wasabi V1's are very questionable with mixed results with some Wii consoles. (ie not working or you have to do some mod to the install which doesn't always fix the timing/power problem that the Wasabi has). Yet to try the Wasabi V2's. Infectus is a nice chip but updates for it are slow.

Nick

At this stage yes i probably would buy the d2pro's.

But note chips and codes change all the time.
So keep an eye out in various forums.
There are a lot of clones out there too, some are good and some are bad.
