Your code:Try this ONCE and ONCE only. Remember,
you only get 3 to 5 tries.

To enter code:
Make sure battery is charged.
Remove SIM first.

Ignore ?Insert SIM?

"Error code" wrong code. STOP tell me.
"Not allowed" or "Can Not Undo Restriction" it's hard locked.
Used up all your free tries!!

If nothing happens, code stays on the screen:
Put in a NEW SIM from a new Network.
Power on.
Select UNDO with NEW SIM in phone.
Enter code as above.
Select OK.

If it does not work, tell me: What happened? What message
you got. What codes you tried.
Above all, answer.

Hi Joe

First of all, thank you so much for offering to help and your instructions were easy to understand. i followed them and go the following message: "Sim Was Not Restricted"

I then put in a new sim card and it states following message: SIM Card not accepted.


I assume this means that it's hard locked? what are your suggestions?

No. I do not think it is hardlocked.
You must activate the SIM with the Network.
Try a SIM that is working in another phone.

Hi Joe-

i tried inputting another working SIM and it reads "Sim Not Accepted". However, when i put in the SIM that originally came with the phone it works fine. I remember when i ordered this service it was through a company called WorldCom who was reselling service on cingulars network. now it gets a little complicated because on the phone and on the original box the phone came with says Voicestream. I am in California region (SF bay area it that helps in figuring out the code or problem). thanks for your help and any advice would be appreciated.

What SIM are you trying to use.
This is an old phone and will not accept the new smart SIMs.
You need to use a "Basic" Standard SIM.


Voicestream is on the T-Mobile Network.

thanks for the info i now understand the issue from what you stated. the 8290 will not work on new smart sims. thats unfortunate but i do appreciate your assistance.
