Is there a program that lets you launch other programs with an IR remote?

I have an HP laptop with an IR port in the front of it and they gave me the full size remote with it. But, the remote launches HP's quickplay and windows media center. i want to change that so it runs my own media player and the other tv tuner i use. Is there a way or a program that can do that?
