All,

Hello. I need some advice. I am digitizing some old camcorder cassettes in the Sony Video8 (8mm) format, NTSC signal. I want to know if I'm using correctly the "2:1 reduction filter (high quality)" filter in VirtualDub 1.7.18.

I read that video resolution for Video8 is around 250*480. I deduced that the best capture resolution is 320*480, with "best" meaning "capture all discernable detail, without wasting disk space and without regard to aspect ratio (to be fixed below)".

The reason I chose the above funky resolution is that, I afterwards apply the "2:1 reduction filter (high quality)" to squish the frames vertically down to 320*240, which restores the original aspect ratio of 4:3. I'm assuming that this 2:1 reduction filter does something like "deinterlacing" on the source video (which in this case is interlaced to begin with).

The resulting file looks good, but I'd like to know if this is the proper usage of the mentioned filter. If anybody has other ideas on how to best digitize Video8, I'd like to hear your experiences.

Thanks for any input.
