There are thousands of articles written about game ripping, DVD ripping, clothes ripping, ripping off customers, tripping, flipping or just about any known subject in the universe. I suggest you type in your browser - www.google.com then type in the search box ***** ripping and see what happens. You'll be amazed. Or come back here and read the posts they are pretty informative ;-)

To "rip" a DvD to your hard drive you need some sort of program such as DvD Decrypter, which you can get here:

Ah bless, I remember the days. OK, so I am still a newbieish person, so I strongly recommend you do this:
1 : Find a website that deals with video ripping, encoding etc (oops, too late, you are already there)
2 : Look in the Articles section for an 'article' on the subject that interests you (DVD rip, DivX, country dancing, Finnish wicker basket making)
3 : Read the article (this bit may be a bit tricky, but I promise it will product results)
4 : Find the section marked downloads (OK this one is tough, but a general tip would be to look for something marked 'software' or 'download'
5 : Download the software
6 : Do not use disk as frisbee/coffee mat
Hey presto, one happy dork!

Hey Perseus, I wasn't trying to be a prick: it was a serious statement. You didn't even seem to know if you wanted to rip a DVD or copy a game or what.
If you want to rip a DVD: http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/dvd2divx_anamorphic.cfm is a guide I found very helpful. Although I prefer to use DVDDecrypter ( http://www.dvddecrypter.com ) rather than SmartRipper (don't know why, they both do the job, but it just 'feels' better), and I prefer to use AC3Decoder ( http://www.ac3dec.com ) to convert the audio from AC3->WAV, rather than letting DVD2AVI do it (it's much faster with ac3dec).
If you want to copy games ("or something") I can't help you.

By the way, your comment about DVD2AVI being slow : I thought so, but if you don't downmix the audio 48-44.1, on my PC it is sooooooo much faster. I otherwise follow the guide here too, although I don't know if my deviation (ahem) is going to cause problems. So far every disk has worked in every computer and every DVD standalone.

Nice zing, Loaded.. :-)
Also, you made me realise that yes, I was downmixing the audio from 48KHz to 44.1 when I used DVD2AVI.. and then when I tried out ac3dec, I tried leaving it at 48, and it was just fine. So true, I didn't do a fair compare. I'll try DVD2AVI without the downmixing (hey, if I can have one less program in the chain, I'm happy..)
The only reason I could find for downmixing is "some sound cards don't like 48KHz". Well, mine obviously does, so that's my mind made up. :-)
