Ok so I bought an HDMI to upconvrt my dvd player to 1080p and wow it does a great job. But then it goes out... Just stops getting signal.

So I figure I bought a cheap one right? Well I take it back cough up a few extra bucks and ya everything is all good again until you guessed it about four months later no signal.

I was thinking might be the dvd player but the cable doesn't work on my 360 either.

So my question is, are all HDMI cables shotty and hit or miss? Do they just have short life spans? What's the deal?

This could be a handshake issue. Try powering on the display, AVR (if you have one) first. Player/Xbox 360 last.

HDMI cables are very sensitive to breakage. Be careful unplugging and plugging in. Always make sure the components are powered off first.

For what it's worth, I buy cheap cables.

Monoprice does have cables that are inexpensive. I have ordered, but made the mistake of getting the HDMI cables with the net jacket. They were well made but I was concerned about the lack flexibility and the weight placed on the hdmi ports. Monoprice has some nifty devices called port savers. I would recommend these, especially if one is continuously unplugging/plugging in your hdmi cables.

Real Canadian Superstore in Canada changed cable suppliers and all their Belkin/no name Loblaw (made by Belkin) cables went on sale ranging from $1.44/$2.44/$4.44. The $2.44/$4.44 were Pure A/V Belkin. Deals were better than Monoprice. Some may or may not have any left. July was when they started to clear out.

In short, deals are to be had.

A more viable, but more expensive solution to wear and tear on HDMI ports/cables would be to invest in a HDMI switcher.
