How does the wii patches function in relation to games?

Hello everyone! I recently purchased a wii equipped with a d2pro modchip because I live in Europe but spend quite a bit of time in the states, and due to the low value of the dollar, I'd like to buy my games there.

Now, the problem is the danger of my wii bricking on me, and so I have a specific question around this that the forum's sticky didnt quite answer. Basically, I would like to know what the wii firmware does. In other words, is the firmware a patch that affect several games, and fix potential bugs, or is it just for the performance of the wii itself? The reasoning behind that question is that I've just read about a program called WiiBrickBlocker, which apparently cleans out the games desire to update. Does that affect my game? If it doesnt update, do I risk missing out on important game updates and run into bugs?

Oh and while I am at it, two other quick questions:

1.) Is a program like WiiBrickBlocker supposed to be downloaded through the wii browser? If so, can Nintendo detect this?

2.) If I manually update my pal machine with pal updates before starting up an ntsc game, will it ever ask me to update?
