A noob here to the world of backing up WII games. I have spent quite a lot of time reading
the other posts on making this happen, but now I am at wits end and have no idea where to go from here.
Hardware: Hitachi-LG GDR-8162B dvd-rom drive
Here's where I'm at so far. First running Windows XP, fully updated with .net 2.0 I got the drive may be faulty error. Read many posts on this and tried several things, as suggested. Such as DMA and PIO settings. Jumper on Master, Cable select and no jumper at all. Also tried opening the tray, putting in the disk and hitting the start dump button as I loaded the disk, and all the above in safe mode. I also have a DVD writer, but I unhooked that and the only thing on the second channel was the DVD rom drive. All of these attempts returned the drive may be faulty error.
The next step: I had an extra (new) harddrive, so I formatted that, installed Windows XP with SP3, and updates. Installed .net 2.0 and tried it again. This time I got this message: System.OverflowException: Arithmetic operation resulted in an overflow. Ok, I again tried all of the above options and kept getting the same error. Also tried installing .net 3.0, but got the same error.
No matter what disk I try, I am getting errors. My Wii is fairly new, and so are the disks. I checked the disks for scratches, and also tried cleaning them, even though they looked fine, but no go. I thought I must be making progress, because at least I got a different error. I don't think the drive is bad cause it reads DVDs and CDs just perfect.
Sorry to ask for help on this, as there are many posts on the same issues, but I just don't know where to go from here.
Thanks for your help!

What's your firmware version?
From the first page of the compatible thread, these are the only confirmed working versions.
GDR-8162B
HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8162B0015 - 2600MB/hr UDMA 2 (uou)
HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8162B0018 - 2130MB/hr (sfsi02)
I didn't go through the thread to see if it has been updated.

It's version 0018
I thought about putting the dvd drive in a box and using a usb cable, but I'm not really sure that would even help.

Sly,
Not sure if I'm the only one, but when I installed XP SP3, I couldn't use RawDump anymore. When I uninstalled XP SP3, it worked again. Not sure what SP3 changes, but it screwed with mine.
Maybe that will help. Try uninstalling SP3, if you have XP that is.

I am running an 8164B0L06 with SP3 and have had no problems.
However, I also run rawdump 2.0 in safe mode since I have so much background stuff running I can run it in normal mode.
Safe mode takes longer, but I have 100% success in backups.
Have you tried Friidump?

I have tried it with SP2, and with SP3. It still will not even begin to dump the image. I've also tried .net 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5. If I try the wii fit dvd, Rawdump will say Wii disk detected, but error out before it gets the name of the dvd. When friidump was tried, it showed the dvd drive as being supported, but after a few seconds, shows failed.
Question, would connecting the dvd via usb be a workable solution, or does anyone think it would probably result in the same errors? If that may be a solution, I'll have to get a box for the dvd.
Thanks for the help!

Is there any way you can borrow someone else's internal to external box converter? I actually use of of those right now with my LG drive. Sometimes I occasionally got problems when I had it attached internally, so I used one of those. I have XP in a VM on an apple computer, and I'm able to successfully rip a game. I would say it's atleast worth a shot, but obviously see if anyone you know has that converter before you have to drop 35 bucks or so to test something that might work.
