Hi Guys

Just a general question.

I wonder if many of you routinely remove trailers, promos and multi language piracy screens from your ripped movies before you back them up to a new DVD ?

I have just found a program called vobblanker which allows you to do this.

I just wonder if it is worth the effort (and possible risk of losing important data) to gain a little better quality movie ?

I use DVD Decrypter and DVD shrink.

Kind regards

I can not speak for anyone else, but i typically leave everything the same when i back a movie up. Unless too much compression is necessary, then it's Movie Only for me!

I think quite a few of the people i see post here use this program.

Again, i can not speak for anyone else. For me personally, quality is foremost.

Both great programs in their hey-day. Neither is updated anymore. DvdFab HD Decrypter is though. Maybe give that a try as well. http://dvdfab.com

Ditto for the most part,i can't stand watching the crap they put on before the movie,i like to get straight into it, however if there's any interviews or making of the movie i just watched then i may add them at the end if they'll fit & not need much compression,if it pushes the main movie below 70% then i'll either dump them or put em on another disk

I use vobblanker religiously. I do amovie and menu. Use shrink to remove all unnecessary audio tracks. Now the resulting file transcodes nicely

My technic

1) rip to HDD with anydvd/ripit4me or dvdfab plat
2) use vobb
3) dvd shrink (set out put to 4480 Mb, using Taiyo Yuden discs only)
4) burn with imgburn
5) enjoy

Thanks guys

Very good replies, lots of ideas and detail. Great.

Are there any ways to check that you do not remove something you want using vobblanker ?

I only remove foreign language and foreign subtitles from mine. I even keep the commentaries (sometimes they have interesting information on them).

My process for completing movies which I follow continuously:

1.) Rip to HDD with dvdfab platinum to dvd9

2.) Scan with fixvts

3.) Use dvd shrink (set to 4300 MB)

4.) Burn with my program (ususally imgburn)

This process has not changed for me in quite a while.

rtm I think if you use "good" media you can run your DVDShrink size to 4450MB. :) I run it to 4475MB with all media but I'm silly you know that. ;)

Digmen1 if you use VobBlanker you can "click" on the titleset of curiosity in the upper box and it will show up in the lower box of which you just click on the set there. It should start playing immediately and you can see if you wanna keep it or NOT. ;)

NOW... even tho I've used VobBlanker many times before, I came across a situation that I've never dealt with before. lol. Anyway it informed me at the beginning of the import that it would "skip" a titleset. Well it ended up trying to "skip" 2 of them. lol. I originally thought NO big deal and just continued. VobBlanker did it's thing and I initially tried DVDShrink to "reduce" my new movie and to my surprise it said NO!!! lol. Wouldn't do it because the "skipped" sets were NOT present and it upset DVDShrink. lol. Soooo I tried DVD RB PRo next and it even said NO!! Well at that point I thought I had VobBlanked the movie beyond usefulness. lol.

I even told Cardinal iluvendo that... he laughed.. :P

On the story goes. ;) So I decided to see what the deal was with the 2 titlesets that it wanted to "skip". There was nothing wrong with them except the fact that they had "multiple" angles and that's a no-no I guess. lol. Well I decided to click the titleset in the upper box and select "process" anyway. THEN selected the titleset in the lower box and had the program "blank" that set. ;)

Hit process after making sure both sets were chosen for "blank" and VobBlanked it again. :D Success was indicated by a "beep-beep" and I immediately tried DVDShrink.... and it WORKED!!! :D

So if you decide to use VobBlanker then be prepared for such silliness!!

I personally like to use the MOVIE ONLY option when ripping as well but sometimes you just have to do the entire movie. :) btw the movie was Layer Cake... if you haven't seen it, DO!!! pretty good movie. ;) I'm trying to find a movie that creaky was talking about now (it's in my sig btw). :D lol. :)

hth in some way... ;)

I used to follow rtm's method exactly. However, here lately I have been doing more and more using the method iluvendo stated. Having kids you tend to be interrupted and I like having the scene selection menu to navigate back to where I left off. I get rid of all the extra stuff like trailers and special features then edit out the menu buttons with PgcEdit.

@ greensman

I had almost the exact same problem recently, however mine was because my disk how the rated and unrated versions with shared titlesets. Backed up like you then went to run shrink and no dice, really threw me for a loop. Finally, just like you I processed it anyway and things came out fine. Yippee!

I tend to keep mine at 4300, as when I used dvdfab platinum, that was its dvd5 setting. I've kept it there since. Haven't changed it...probably won't ever.

lol.. ;) nothing wrong with that and actually ensures that the media you choose even if it's good stuff will not affect the outcome of the burn unless the disc is actually bad. ;0 As you know most of the "errors" that occur are near the end of a burn... so you're covered there or should be. :)

I do prefer to use TDK +r's. I know a few of you don't like them, but hey....they have worked great for me coming on...almost 3 years now. I'm down to less than 50 disks, but I won't be needing to buy anymore for a while now.

Just tell me when you need more.. I gots a bunch.. :P Don't tell creaks tho... he'll slap me around.. hehehe. :P

So it seems that most of you remove almost all the "extra" junk and go from there. ;) Sounds like a plan.

These are the last ones I purchased from radio shack when they had them on sale. Ordered them online, and had gotten free shipping. Bought 400 disks for about $95+ tax.

Tons of good info by the regulars here!

Movie only renders top notch quality for SL burning, and unless i can pick up some Verbie DL's on sale, i refrain.

I use VobBlanker quite a bit as well. It's quite the powerful little tool. To the OP you'd do well to learn and use it. It is very handy!

My target output size is typically 4430. I don't strictly use Taiyo Yuden, but primarily that's what i burn. Mix in some Verbs, and once in a while a RICHOJPN RO3. (office depot has 100 packs on sale right now. Some RICHOJPN some RITEK)

All in all, you see the variance of personal preference in this thread. Bottom line is finding what works best for your (the OP's) needs, and your pc. Every pc is a bit different. Find the mix that works for you, and roll with it.

Once again thanks lots more good replies

I see several references to movie sizes of 4480, 4430 and 4300.

Where does one set these sizes ?

Is it when ripping or encoding ?

I Use Dvd Dedcrypter, DVD Shrink and then sometimes, Auto Gordian Knot.

Sorry to be a pain.

the simplest way to remove trailers and such is to use Clone dvd2 with anydvd
Clone gives you three choices 1 burn main title only
2 burn everything as on original
and three burn existing dvd files from your HD
a one click choice and your done!
