Yeah, you can do that. I have my sh-d162c internally in my desktop that I built, but I also have an adapter which converts internal drives to USB connected external drives.

I've tested it out on my laptop (which is an apple with windows running in a VM). It works perfect. So yes, you can attach it to your laptop. But you would just need something which will convert the drive from an internal drive to an external. You can find them on newegg or so.
