Try ripping the disc to your HDD using DVDFab HD Decrypter and then use Shrink. This movie requires a lot of compression. You may not like the results. You might want to try using DVD Shrink to process the movie only to a new folder with no compression and then use the free version of DVD Rebuilder.

I'll second that, Shrink just can't do justice to films such as the Lord of the Rings movies. I used Rebuilder for all mine (movie only to save space), and just did a quick check and my Two Towers still came out at 59.7% video compression, as i say Shrink just can't cut it with such extreme compression.

I have never tried putting a movie this large on an ipod. I agree with dialysis advice and use dvdfab to rip the movie. You can use the trial version of dvdfab platinum to shrink it to mp4 format. It may take a few hours to convert it. Which ever program you try to use, it may help to rip it to your HDD first before converting it.

I should add that i've never shrunk anything to ipod style format so i've no idea as to if it would shrink properly or not (to ipod size)

Once the movie is ripped, it takes about the same amount of time as the movie is to convert it to another format. It can be a real pain. That's why I don't do that many conversions to ipod.

I didn't see the ipod part either. I saw the thread title and the part about using DVD Shrink. Senior moment!

Is the disc clean and scratch free?
Are you using DvdFab as recommended earlier?
