But first i have a few questions.

I have the homebrew channel on there, is there any difference between having custom firmware and having the homebrew channel, other than playing DVD's?

Can you play backups burned on the DVD-R?

Well, the only way to play backups is with a modchip, is your wii modded? There's no way to play backups with just a firmware mod.
