Hello all.

I undertand that this is probably going to sound really, really
stupid, but here's my situation - any help would be much appreciated, and I'll try to describe as much as I can.

I obtained a PSP 3rd hand - that is to say, it belonged to my friend, who obtained it from his friend.

The PSP 1000 (fat model, seems to be older mobo) already has CFW on it, it labels itself 3.40 kernel (when viewed in service mode, 3.40 OE-A when viewed from the system settings menu in XMB) and allows me to run cso, etc.

However, I need to upgrade - from what I've read, I'm really far behind on firmware, and i can't even play any new games or interact with my ps3 using it, other than the basic features.

I am not the one who modded this psp, and I therefore have not installed cfw before - however I assume that if one already has cfw it shouldn't be too hard to upgrade to a new cfw.

Again, i realize that you may have answered this question en masse already, (i searched but didn't find any exact answers) but I assume those firmwares provided by a certain fellow by the name of alex would be the next logical step.

My questions are:

1: How do I determine where my cfw came from? (or is it possible?)

2: do the cfw from one version to the next need to come from the same maker, or does it matter?

3: by what process would one load new firmware? (a link or instructions of any kind would be helpful)

4: do I need a datel tool/pandora's battery/magic ms to make this work/perform this upgrade without bricking?

5: does one need to load cfw in order of version - that is to say, could one go from cfw 3.4 straight to cfw 4.01, or would one need to step through each one progressively?

5a: does this also hold true for the kernel updates? do they need to be installed in tandem with the firmwares?

Again, many thanks and I look forward to becoming a good member of the forum community here.

- Helba

Welcome to the forums :) Your post is not dumb, there are a few steps to upgrade your firmware.

1. You already did :) 3.40 OE-A is made by Dark-AleX, who pioneered the concept and is now the leading hand in newer ones.

2. Doesn't matter; though they are mostly made by the same guy anyhow.

3. http://www.dark-alex.org/index_psp.php
Download 3.52 M33, and M33-4. Upgrade to 3.52 M33, then run the semi update, M33-4. This will allow you to upgrade to 3.71 M33, from which you can go to 4.01 M33, and then the semi-update, M33-2.

4. I advise it. Make any version of the Pandora memory stick you choose, since you have the 1000 model. I recommend Despertar del Cementerio v7, accessible via the link.

5. Answered in 2.

5a. The kernel is nothing you should be concerned about. It updates with the firmware, since it is the firmware.

Thank you for not posting in overly emphasized 1337 speak, and for organizing your post so well. :)

Oh, no you're welcome - if anything, thank you! I've been researching this for months but have been too scared of bricking it to try anything without asking those who are more knowledgeable.

Unfortunately, most forums on this sort of topic tend to be closed or invite-only, and I thus have only been able to read but not ask any questions of my own.

What directory on the memory stick do i need to place it in? In most videos etc i've seen it in what looks like the game menu - is that the correct folder to place it in?

Can i simply load the new firmware into the (insert proper folder here) folder on the ms and run it from the xmb, or do i need to do something special?

Yes, I figured i had the 3.40 Open Edition cfw, but I wasn't sure so I asked anyway :)

As to organization, etc, I run the support department for an online game (pc) so I know something about what mods hate to see :)

Well, as is indicated in all the read-me files in the downloads, you place the files in /PSP/GAME/. Just make sure you read them, because for installing 3.52 M33, you need more than one step. (Creating the .dxar file. It WILL take upwards of 10 minutes. So as long as the orange memory stick LED is flashing, keep it on :))

I am considering just doing the firmware upgrades you suggested without making the magic memory stick first - what is the chance of brickage if I follow your instructions? (I have ordered a second memory stick and datel tool, I'm just impatient and want to play locoroco :P )

Well, the chances are very slim. If you follow the readme's exactly, and don't get mixed up, and know what you are doing, then the chances are almost nil. I do recommend you make one first, since that way you can skip it altogether. It's actually quicker and safer to make a Pandora battery then go through the update process.

Use this to make your battery Pandora: http://pspupdates.qj.net/Pandora-Install...g/49/aid/103441

Download the Despertar del Cementerio v7 from my first link, and run that as well. Follow the readme.

Download 3.52 M33, and M33-4. Upgrade to 3.52 M33, then run the semi update, M33-4. This will allow you to upgrade to 3.71 M33, from which you can go to 4.01 M33, and then the semi-update, M33-2.

OK.....

So I should do the following:

Skip the 3.51 M33 group entirely.

Download 3.52 M33, and skip 3.52 M33-2 and 3.52 M33-3.
Download 3.52 M33-4.

Download 3.71 M33, and skip 3.71 M33-(2 through 4 as well as the kernel updates, 1 and 2, which I don't need.)

Skip all the way to 4.01 M33 group.

Download 4.01 M33, and 4.01 M33-2, but NOT the 4.01 M33 kernel update.

Am I correct?

Please let me know!!

(and thank you.)
