If I download a file from any site I usually am at 420-450 KB but when in file sharing it seems that drops to about 4-5 Kb. Anyone have a clue how to make those numbers jump up a little higher. Let's say 35-40 would do. I am on cable and have a great connection speed normally.

this is just a wild guess but id say because you are getting your files off people who have a slower connection than what you are use to, they are slowing you down to their upload speed...

peyton damm what connection you got to be able to get 450 K/B damm thats major speed
laudern hit the nail on the head I run 1024k and limit the upload speed to 20 k/b as My pc can run normally all the time at that speed any faster and My pc starts to lag

Cable can do 450. Ive been known to hit 500-600 on what was supposedly a 192Kbyte/sec line.

I am on comcast and usually get around 350 to 450 on most downloads.. the least is around 160 to 200 though.. Comcast has seriously improved here lately

I too have Comcast. They upgraded the network to 3.3 mbit/s dl. So 450 kB/s is hallucinating, the most you can attain is 403kB/s (unless you have the home networking or business package, as they have a little more speed.) I agree though, it's great in comparison to the old 1.8 caps!

That is el wrongo. I have hit as high as just over 600 for a few seconds. Charter has given me 2mip for speed till the end of March. They tried to claim that I was a good customers. Boy did I fool them. So I am trying to take advantage of that but not very successful at it. My normal is set at 512. That was why I was asking. When not on a server I can pull down a 12 meg program in less than one minute. I have been estatic over the speed. I now have almost 17 gig of programs alone with more to come. I unfortunately have no clue how to run an FTP(I have tried several times unsuccessfully)or I would. Anyway that is my story and I'm sticking to it.

I got a notice in the mail from comcast about 2 months ago saying they were working on the network in my area and my network speed would be improved.. Again they said this was in specific area's. I guess you are not in the specific area because I do get 300 to 450 and on occasion I see 500 to 600 for 10 to 15 seconds.. then it drops.. but it's very rare..Also you do know that the more people online and the closer you are to the network plays a big part in your speed.. Unless you have DSL then it doesn't matter

I still don't have an answer to the question of why such a large drop in speed. It does not matter who I download from slow or fast. When I download from a lan(t1) I very rarely get above the 10 speed. I do realize that when you go into filesharing that the speed will drop but it shouldn't drop that much. Especially if your set for 2mip. And cable does not fluctuate with more people on. It is dsl as I use to have dsl and it totally sucks. I never got above 20 with it.

What is the difference between DSL and cable modems?
DSL provides always-available high-speed Internet access over a single dedicated telephone line. Cable modems offer high-speed Internet access over a shared cable television line.
While cable modems may have equal theoretical downstream (from the Internet to the home) bandwidth capabilities, that bandwidth is shared among all users in a neighborhood, and will therefore vary, perhaps dramatically, as more users in a neighborhood get online at the same time.
Upstream traffic (from the customer premise to the Internet) over cable modems will in many cases be slower than DSL, either because the particular cable modem is inherently slower, or because too many people in a neighborhood are trying to send or receive data at the same time - causing congestion in the local cable network.
DSL Advantages
? Faster than cable modem service during peak usage periods*
? DSL service is flexible enough to grow with the skills and interests of our users
? Customers can also use dial-up connections, and access services like email remotely
? DSL is as reliable as your phone
? DSL speed (or "synch-rate" from customer location to the serving central office/DSL gateway) stays consistent, as opposed to the shared systems used by cable companies where speed may decrease as more users sign up.
* Based on a month-long benchmarking study by Keynote Systems, DSL was found to be 11% faster than cable modems
Cable Modem Disadvantages
? Reliability and privacy issues, since bandwidth is shared over the local cable network
? Shared bandwidth can cause slowdowns due to local network congestion

Thanks Matt. And I guess that would be the rest of the story. Always thought the other way. I use direct connect for my filesharing. But then I have used Imesh, Napster, Audiognome, Winmx, etc and all are the same. Slow speed no matter what or who I am downloading from. It just can't be right. I get kicked for having to slow of a speed downloading.

I have not used that before. Kazaa lite has given me some pretty fast downloads.. I recently tried Emule and that was really slow as well.. When you download your file are you looking at what bandwith the file has before you download? The files usually get sent from alot of different people, so if they have a slow transfer rate then you get a slow download rate..

The main reason I use DC is they are from overseas and they deal in the terabyte stage on all their hubs. Some of the hubs will have as much as 120-130 terabyte but most are in the 30-40 terabyte stage. Very rarely will you not find what you are looking for no matter how odd it is(movies, programs, songs, etc.).

Yeah I only just got dc++ going stuck in passive mode at the moment will have to fiddle with settings more later......
So are you guys who pull at upto 600K all in the states?? cause in England I think the fastest connection is 2048 which I may switch to later in the year ....how much is such a fast connection to?? wish we had it here I can download at 140K at My peak but nothing like 400-500-600K

I've never gotten DC above 10kbs, my max is supposed to be 150 (DSL), but i've hit 180 on Kazaa a few times. I prefer Emule even with it's slow start you'll eventually reach some good speeds (most i ever got was 90k in total transfer), but I've never gotten my old Kazaa speeds.
BTW, DSL has the extra advantage of giving you a brand new IP address every time your modem reconnects.

Right now my speed is costing me 56 dollars a month. But that is for 512 not 2mip. The 2mip is just an extra till end of March. In California 2mip runs in the 150 dollar mark. I paid 53 dollars for DSL but the highest speed I could obtain was about 30-40k when not on a server. On a server it would around .5-1. They said I was too far away to get a good signal. The changing the ip every time was nice tho. But then I now have Kaspersky Anti-hacker, Intruder 99, Norton Anti-Virus, Untraceable, and A square all running in the background. So far Kaspersky and Intruder have been very successful at stopping all of them from coming in. They cover all the open ports for me. I actually broke down and bought Kaspersky and Norton. But you can never be totally safe.
