I know as the owner of a DVD I am alowed a backup copy; I buy many British DVDs, R2 PAL, rip and transfer them to NTSC, burn them. When I sell the original (of no use to me now), what's the consensus on including the backup for the new owner--as a DVD owner, do I have the right to only MAKE a backup, or do they have the right to HAVE a backup (that they did not personally make themselves)? I often charge for the extra DVDs and time and postage (minimal, like $3 per disc) which people have no problem with, as these DVD TV series will never be available as NTSC or Region 1 discs. What about TRADING DVD sets? I trade with a few Aussie folks, the original DVDs and the backups, for the like. Just want your thoughts on this. My entire collection is all my DVD +Rs, as I sell the original DVDs to others and keep my NTSC copies--sometimes making the new owner a copy as well. Thoughts on these specifics or corollary issues?

'Never be available as NTSC or Region 1'. How can you be sure they won't be released as region 1 at a later date. BBC America has released quite a few british shows as region 1.

In my opinion, when you sell the dvd, you are no longer the owner and have no legal right to keep the back up copy.

In most areas, this is true.

the law states if you sell/get rid or the original store bought DVD you have to destroy the backup. your gray area that you are trying to justify does not fly in any way shape or form!

I was off 3 months and did not even check the account, as my original post was a mere query, nothing I am even wondering about--I wanted to see if the reaction would range from a "whatever, like it really matters" to a "my GOD--YOU ARE BURNING CDs for your own use?!!!" hysterical rant, and so now I see the ridiculous hyper-prissy culture on here.
