a while ago sammoriss recomended i shud use this motherboard
http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductId=847360

but i considered and thought that i didnt need the ddr3.. and maybe not even the crossfire support
(crossfire because i dont see myself buying a second graphics card of same model..rather buy a new graphics card)

so id like my new motherboard to be able to be
-amd 9850 compatible
-and support the ati 4870
-only ddr2 support

price budget is £40-70)

You know that motherboard didn't support the AMD cpu either, right? Do you need it? If you don't already have that AMD then I would suggest getting a Q6600 and keeping that motherboard. You might save 10 quid getting that DDR2 version, but I would say DDR3 support might come in handy.

Indeed, I suggested it solely on the basis you were switching to Intel. You don't have to switch to Intel, but based on performance figures off numerous bench sites, even the most expensive Phenoms are beat by the cheapest Core 2 Quads. I don't own one myself, but nonetheless, I can confirm the £110 Q6600 is an absolute monster...

well my first thought was to get an amd phenom 9850..but u say that the Q6600 produces beta results and i have looked at the benchmarks but i guess the price just sorta put me off..its something that i keep swaying side to side to..on the Q6600 it sayz its "energy effiecient" any idea what that means?

im gonaa use the computer to do mainly gaming

what processor are u using sam if u dont mind me asking??

thanx

(sorry for the late reply)

The 9850 black actually costs more than the Q6600 where I look, especially here:
http://www.aria.co.uk/Products/Component...productId=28356

I am using this exact same CPU (Q6600) from this exact same store.

We both use Q6600s on our good days lol. Sam always has a Q6600 and I do sometimes and sometimes I use a dual core.

Anyway the point is, Q6600 is the way to go. It's not that expensive.

It's cheap, hilariously fast, overclocks reasonably well (certainly better than an AMD) and is every bit as fast, if not faster than one, even at stock. It uses less power, produces less heat, and is just an all round nice chip...

No problem. I don't like to perpetually steer people away from AMDs, but all the evidence really does seem to suggest they're nicer chips, especially if you're an overclocker.

I use that exact PSU, with that exact CPU, and I've now switched to an HD4870X2, and overclocked the Q6600, works fine.
