I decided to start backing up my DVDs and converting to Divx to play from a hard drive on my xbox 360 (which supports divx and xvid)

Im using AutoGK, and selecting the file size based on quality at 100% because the hard drive im going to use is over 500gb so size is not an issue. I dont actually have the drive yet so for now im testing all this on a USB flash drive and a burned DVD-R.

Everything seems to go well, the 2 movies i have tried thus far come out to around 2 - 2.5GB in size which is fine, quality looks AMAZING

anyways, it seems like when playing back, every 5 minutes or so it hits a snag and does this little pause thing, then once it unpauses it skips ahead to where it would have been without the pause, almost like some kind of fast forward. its not always every 5 minutes thats just to give an idea of how often... a few times its made it much longer without doing so.

I have tried playing from a USB flash drive AND dvd rom of the 360 in case it was a USB issue... happens either way.

any ideas? thanks!

hi valkyr47!

used to see this kind of thing when the video streams bitrate was too high for the processor to deal with so it wouldhave to buffer it.

for the sake of problem solving, try encoding it at a lower bitrate (quality) and see if it improves...

additionally, it may be worth seeing if your player application is using 'hardware acceleration' - it should be...

because im trying to run these on my xbox 360 i cant install any apps

thanks for the advice, i suppose i will try and encode at a lower bitrate (maybe like 80% quality) but i really like the resolution its at now, i wish the 360 could handle it

do you think a standalone divx/dvd player would be better?

maybe.

i mean, i may be wrong and sending you on a wild goose chase...

tho at 80% you may not see a loss in quality anyway...

Ok thanks!

I wasnt sure about the quality thing.. i mean i had no idea that the higher quality meant it took more processing to display.

I might even go for just 75% and see what it looks like

I guess thats the trade-off, im pretty much doing this out of convenience so i can just fire up my 360 and scroll a list to watch a film instead of digging through my huge dvd collection that is not organized and taking 15 minutes to find a film.. but at the same time im very picky about movie quality and wanted the best i could have.

I just tried again with encoding at as low as 75% quality, and still no luck... the videos are still skipping periodically

so i guess im just going to give up trying to do this, and keep having to dig out my movies from the closet. It would have been so nice to just dump all these divx backups on a hard drive and play them easily, but i dont think its going to work out, plus i cant really watch them if the quality gets any worse

thanks for all the advice though, its appreciated

Try and use the xvid codec. I've notice when using divx that it isn't compatible with all players. Xvid on the other hand works perfectly on every player I played it on.

Try and go with a 900 to 1000 kbs bitrate, that gives me good performancce. I wouldn't go any higher than 2000 kbs bitrate.

its a personal opinion of course, but i've always prefered xvid over divx...
