Say Rav, ever thought of adding Mozilla Thunderbird to the list as an Outlook alternative, with a built in spam/phishing filter ?

rav009: i want to give u my recommendation on a firewall. Go with Kerio Personal firewall or Kerio WinRoute FW. I tried every single FW on your list out, from the freeware to the commercial versions. None of them come close to Kerio IMHO. I'm using KPF v4.2.2 and it blocks everything. Lets you block firewall ports on incoming traffic, outgoing traffic from firewall to certain remote ports, applications from launching. popup blocker. ActiveX monitor. Ban domain names or individual IP addys. I could go on & on about it.
What tells me its the best is i've run a worm against my desktop over the net using all the FW. A few detected it, but only Kerio was able to stop it entirely. I also brute force attacked a weak application (Outlook) while it was checking mail & all the FW except Commdo & Kerio left the program vulnerable with an open port. Zone Alarm performed very good; i don't like the interface. Kerio has an easy to understand layout. Read the docs a bit & you'll see everything is where it should be.

Of all the firewalls, if you want the best try Kerio. Learn how FW work, learn how ports work & what a DDOS/syn flood are. As long as you aren't running any apps which open ports that you might need, block them all. Only let a few trusted apps like your P2P/Bittorrent client open ports & even then monitor the traffic to see if someone is trying to access the other ports. With a bit of learning, all of us can run the best protection.

I found a list of common trojan horses and the ports they use here. If you run the program called Active Ports 1.4 from here, it will show you which ports are active & communicating with the Internet or your home network.

HOSTS file explained (really easy to read)

woah the past 2 weeks has been kind of crazy. Ever since I installed Kerio firewall i've been researching security. I thought by reinstalling windows (using Winborg v5) it had increased my d/l & u/l speeds. Nope, it was all that ICMP flooding to my connection. Just by installing a firewall & setting the rules, i've stopped thousands (not kidding) of attempts to portscan & break into my computer.

If you want to really protect yourself, Google on "port scan" and "ICMP flood". Setting up a good firewall is not easy. If it was, millions of people wouldn't get hacked every week.

ICMP Traffic = hackers

more ICMP stuff

Your average 15yo teenager can fraggle, smurf & do other nasty things to huge computer networks. So why wouldn't they f*** with your PC? Think about it.

OpenDNS FartDude mentioned this. As long as their DNS doesn't filter any gaming sites or pr0n i like to see....well adding another layer of IP blocking is good.

There is another security threat related to certain ports on your computer. Block those with a firewall, read this

Want to see the running apps in your computer? Want to see if any spyware is loaded & you can't see it? (Ctrl+Alt+Del does not show root or HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion running progs) See this then surf over to Runscanner.net to pick yourself up a copy.

Hi rav009

First of all great work on the guide youve put alot of work in and I found it very useful.

Anyway ive just bought a laptop with Vista on it im trying to install ZoneAlarm but its not liking it. Is it compatible with vista?

If not which is the best one to use?

cheers

Ok update -- I tried to install Comodo and a popup came up saying that it wasnt compatible. When i clicked ok a box came up saying windows compatibility and asked if i wanted to try again using default settings. When i clicked yes it installed it fully but then a box came up again saying there a compatability issues and i might not be getting full protection i should uninstall comodo and use windows firewall.

Just rebooted my Laptop and it says in the summery section all the securaty monitors are set to off and they wont turn on.

Vista currently doesn't have adequate anti-virus or firewall solutions.. They are more bothered what YOU do with your computer than what others can do to you..

Virus definitions list, info and cleaning methods. http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/

Remember..the best anti-virus is no internet explorer and no windows.

Well, I've had those programs in your list on my computer for a while now. Just recently I've gotten some sort of virus/spyware on my computer...Has a little bubble that pops up in the bottom right corner telling me to click on it to download some spywarelocked program (which i'm pretty sure is spyware itself) Anyways, my father ended up clicking on it and downloading it thinking it would stop the bubble from popping up. Now when i use AVG, and Spybot to search for infections, no threats show up. However, i downloaded a program called spyware doctor and did a scan with that. It showed i had approximately 56 infections. (desktop hijacker, trojan, worm, and a few others) So my question is...is there anything free out there i could use to fix these infections since the freeware listed here that i have tried doesnt seem to pull any results (spyware doctor only lets me scan, doesnt let me fix since its not registered)

Thanks for any help.

i would download nod32 the trail version and scan your computer for the virus and it will find it and kill it as soon as it got it. it will also remove any spyware in your computer. i sware by it. what ever you do dont install norton ever again it can take over your computer. i think it safe to says that.

nice compile. you guys should check out merjin's site http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/
it contains a lot of freeware anitmalware. he is also the original creator of CWShredder and Hijackthis(he sold both to trendmicro). be aware that most tools on his site are for the more advanced pc users

also two tools you should get are
unlocker http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Syst.../Unlocker.shtml delete files that won't let you delete them!
startup(cpl) http://www.mlin.net/ a better application startup list program, will list more than anything else
these also are geared more towards the advanced pc users

also the best (imo) PAY for antivirus/security suite is kaspersky http://www.kaspersky.com/. it has updates almost every hour.

The only firewall that comes to mind is Zone Alarm. You can try that.
