Maxi, you can buy better discs than the HP's at supermediastore.com
I can't understand why it is giving you a region code error message,as home made DVD's have no region code, hence they are region-free,and should play in all players/drives.Then again,it could be the lack of a region code that the software dosent like,or the way the disc's file system is structured.

Try download.com,there are several players there for free, although i dont know if you will find one without adware built in to it.You can try one of the trial ones, which requires purchase after a trial period, but there are ways round that so you can get it for free.

Also,it may be worthwhile starting a new thread in this forum and in www.videohelp.com forum, and ask the question about what software is good for playing home-made discs,as opposed to pre-recorded discs. You should get a better response if you start a topic with a specific question.Head the topic something like "Playing home-made DVD on PC.What software works?"
And then describe your problem.More people will see it,and you'll have more chance of a reply than if you asked the question within this section alone.

good luck ( and Hi Fret !)

Hi Max----------
The dvd program that came with my computer (Dell) had not been set up properly for the Region.. Check the program that plays your dvd's and be sure it is set for America (USA)------------I think it is Region 1.
But, like I said before, my computer would not recognize any type dvd (except those rented/purchased) until Cult told me to try the HP brand; that's the only brand I use now.. Hope this info helps..

Hi Max..
Just saw your last post.. The drw500 itself is already programmed for Region 1 so you can't change that. You need to set up your computer software for Region 1 as well. Sanyo customer service recommends using any speed UP TO 4x (that does not mean higher speed would not work but I was curious also and that is their advise and 4x is what I use.) I agree with Cult, there probably are better brands than HP, but after he put me on the HP it worked with my computer and I have not had a single problem with the drw500 nor the computer since. You said you already had a dvd player program on your computer so my suggestion is that you ensure that it is set up right (mabbe try a commercial/rental movie on it) and give the HP a try.
Also, as a suggestion from my own experience, get you a few DVD-RW's to do all this experimenting with. I went through about 50 dvd-r's that I had to trash before I wised up.
Good Luck to you and I will keep an eye on this site so feel free to ask away if you have more questions. I will help any way that I can.

Fret,Just to clarify though that the 500 does not set a region code on discs that it records. It makes region-free discs,as do all other recorders. You are right when you say it is set for region 1 but that is on playback, and will affect store-bought discs only !!

DON'T HIT ME CULT!! (smile)
I was trying to answer Max' question as to how he sets the Region on his dvd (I assumed he was speaking of his 500)by telling him he couldn't. BUT, if someone in Irag were to make him a VIDEO DVD on a computer and had their computer software program set to another Region, he could not play it----right?? (Without changing his computer software to that particular region.) I'm just going by what sanyo customer service said. They also said you could occasionaly get a store bought one that was defective and it would give you that error. Of course they always sound like they are telling you anything to get you off the phone...
Remember, I am only as smart on this 500 as YOU taught me to be!! (smile)

Go ahead,make my day.

Hi Max...........I'm at a loss for words right now........Not sure I understand where you are having a problem... See if this is correct:
1. You record something on the 500 and it plays back ok on the 500.
2. You put it in your dvd drive on a computer, your dvd player program starts, but you get an error message
3. Or you put it in your dvd drive on a computer and you get no response.
If this is correct, give me the name of the software that you are using for playing dvd's on your computer.
I will try to take it from there.......

Fret, when you said the 500 is already programmed for region 1,what did you mean? Did you mean that it is set to record region 1,or play back region 1?
The 500(as other recorders) is set to record NTSC discs with NO region code,ie region-free or region 0,which should,in theory, play on ANY DVD player.(Providing its not too old)
NTSC is the US TV system and this is seperate from region codes.
Region-free discs will even play on a PAL DVD player and vice-versa,it just depends whether the TV can display the picture correctly(Now i am going off track a bit :-)

Maxi,I'm stumped as to why your PC software wont recognise the discs made on the 500.Does your PC DVD drive support the type of discs you are trying to use on it?
Another thing, when i put a disc in,I can play it with Windows Media PLayer, although i dont get sound for some reason.Open the WM Player, and go to the menu at the top.CLick Play, then click DVD or CD Audio, and choose the drive your disc is in.You should get it on the screen and you can even use your mouse to navigate the menu.Like i said,i didnt get sound when i tried it,but that may just be my PC acting up !

Your problem is identical to what I went through. Cult advised me that he was using the HP brand so I switched and have not had any problems since! All I can suggest at this time is to give them a try..

Hi. I just got the Sanyo DRW 500 from Walmart. So far, mine seems to do what it supposed to do. Using just Memorex DVD+RW, it recorded the VHS tapes with no problem. The good news for me is that they play fine on my Sony DVD player and also on my computer using Intervideo. That was my main purpose for buying a recorder so I'm happy. The only other recorder I tried was a Liteon which was very good except the recorded DVDs did not play on my Sony nor on a neighbor's player. (Forgot what brand). Only problems I had so far were 2 lockups - had to unplug then replug the unit to work again. I'm not too concerned about this (should I be?) since I've had to do this to my computer also. Maybe I caused this by pressing too many commands at once.
One issue I have is that my Sanyo has a 24 hour military clock. Do all of yours have one also? Or is it only on some models made at a certain time perhaps? I'm also going to get that video enhancer that was mentioned.
Great site! Great forum!

Hey Max.........sorry it didn't work. I've been there so I know how frustrating it is; but what works for some just doesn't work for others.. Don't give up the ship yet.. Try a program that is designed specifically for dvd playing, you can find a FREE one at http://www.cliprex.com or there are numerous others that give free trials---just do a search for "dvd player software" and check them out. Try that FREE one first. Possibly nothing likes WMF NOR WINAMP. I use a program like these that came with the pc. If I led you astray I apologize but it worked for me.
Try downloading that free program and let me know how it goes.

FAN-TASTIC NEWS MAX!!
I guess I take things too seriously but it really bugs me to give someone advice and it be wrong.. I felt pretty bad when I read your last post about it not working. I still think I would get a program that is designed specifically for dvd playing/recording (THAT'S ONLY A THOUGHT! smile)
Well go get 'em and enjoy.. Anything I may help you with give me a shout!!

Hi Firsttimer... Sorry i didn't address your question right away, was concentrating on the problem Max was having.
As far as I know all the 500's use the 24 Hour clock. I sorta enjoy it though, being a retired military man. smile..
You are right it is a darn good site!!
I'm always around so let me know if there is any way I can assist you.

Just recently started having problems with timer recording with my sanyo. The recorder comes on at the correct time but it doesn't start to record, it just comes on and sits there and doesn't go off by itself either.

Uh Oh smokey afraid that one may be above my head. All the mechanical issues I have seen on here seem to get resolved by unplugging the 500 from the electrical outlet for a while and plugging it back in.. That's a stab in the dark that you might try, it's supposed to resync everything. Does it happen all the time now?? I know it sounds dumb but set your timer for a recording and look the info over real good to be sure you have entered everything right. Guy on this forum by name of "Cult" that is well versed on technical aspects of dvd's; he will eventually notice your post and probably have you a better response.. Wish I could help.

Thanks Jerry. Do you know of a reason why they put a 24 hour clock in it? I tell you, it was because of this site and the great tips that I found out about the video enhancer. Didn't know there was such a thing! I'm now copying my pre-recorded tapes to DVD. Could'nt wait for mail order so bought it at a local Compusa store yesterday. Paid an arm and a leg for it but I'm enjoying it! Thankyou! Thankyou! Thankyou!

Thanx usafret for "your stab in the dark!" It worked. I unplugged it overnight and set the clock the next morning and the timer recording works fine now. Thanx again.
