I got this message from a customer today. Can anyone give any suggestions? I've never heard of this problem.
Quote: It seems that the ps2 when turned on is asking for all the pre-registration information all over again such as the time zone, time, and language. It seems like it lost it's memory and needs to be put in everytime I turn it off and restart it. Not only that but even after I do enter all the information again and get to the main menu of the console the ps2 will not read the copied or burned games anymore. I was wondering if the modchip itself is broken or if I messed up the settings for it somehow or if the ps2 needs something to be replaced or what might be wrong with it? The modchip you installed on the ps2 is the Crystal Chip just so you know.

That is strange, I got an idea though. There is a BIOS battery on the side of the optical drive (on original PS2). I recall having that unplugged for a bit and then I had to enter info upon startup as well. Maybe that cable was unplugged and never plugged back in?

But wouldn't it ask for that info every time? He said the units been working since I gave it to him, and then one day, bam, it does this..
Thanks for the input tho!

You are correct, though being a battery isn't it able to die? Never heard of one dying but that's what comes to mind for me. Don't think it would hurt to replace the battery.

Thanks very much for the help HG27. I'll tell him to ship the unit back. That will most likely be the first thing I'll try.
Any other ideas, I'd appreciate it.

Once again HG27, I'd like to show my appreciation.
On a ps2 parts website under the battery section, it says
"Product Description:
If your playstation 2 cannot keep the date and time settings you probably need to replace this battery."
Seems like you where right! I'll post after I replace the battery.

Now I'm not so sure. I got the ps2 today, took the battery up and put it on my volt meter. Its reading 3v...what it's supposed to be.
Any other theories?

Hey HG27....the battery your referring to is the small circular silver one located on the motherboard correct?

I think I know what your referring to. I've seen that battery on the dvd drive only on verson 1-4 ps2s. Unfortuantly this is a V5 ps2 and doesnt have such a battery. I've taken the entire drive apart and can't find the source. I did first try to change the motherboard battery even though it was showing 3v.
Any other ideas? Thanks much to anyone who can reply.

It starts to sound like somebody has been messing about trying to flash the bios. i don't know much about the internal workings of the ps2.. but most modchips involve a lot of wires to the bios chip on the mobo.. and that is where I would start looking.

I appreciate the help guys. I can't say how I did it, but after reassembling the dvd drive...the ps2 works and does not ask for any registration info.
I am starting to think my customer tried to update the firmware of the chip or something like that.
In any case, I really appreciate the help. If admins feel it's necessary, this post can be closed.
Thanks again!
