VOB Files-1GB limit?

Is there a reason why a 1GB file size limit is suggested on most Ripping Apps? Could I make one VOB file approx. 4.2GB in size?

1GB is the maximum size for the DVD-Video standard. If you have larger VOBs you should still be able to play them on your computer and may be able to play them on your standalone (but I wouldn't bet on it), but if you want the disc to play in most standalones you need to stick to 1GB VOBs.

I don't know what advantage there would be to having larger VOBs anyway. I used to use VobEdit to join parts of different disks, which created a single large VOB which IFOEdit would rewrite as several smaller ones, but I can do the same thing in fewer steps/less time with DVD Shrink now so I don't use that method anymore.
