I have windows xp and use dvd shrink, burning slow.

So in my secondary IDE channel advanced settings they says use DMA if applicable, but underneath that in current transfer mode it says PIO Mode, so in trying to delete the driver, my device manager keeps freezing.

How can i fix this?

The usual method is to right click the device in the DM
and select uninstall. Upon reboot it's re-detected and reinstalled.

Then check the DMA mode. IF you're unable to get UDMA to stick,
and you're sure the device supports UDMA and the IDE channels
in the BIOS are properly set up (they should be by default),
you could try replacing the ribbon cable.

Ok I deleted both primary and secondary ide channels (4 total) and rebooted and it went back to dma mode, but i have a feeling this is a temporary fix and will need to be done each time the setting gets switched back.

Is there a permanent fix?

Try a new ribbon cable.

a permanent would be get a Sata Optical Drive! instead of using IDE ODD
