..i recoded using virtualdub 1.8 from a divx movie,676 MB and got a same standard xvid file but of 331 MB. i used the fast encode, but left everything else at default..

..is this size reduction normal ?, or did i push some button on the virtualdub..

..i'll admit this is my first time using vdub, slow but i'm impressed

It's to do with the xvid settings. In virtualdub, select
video/compression/xvid/configure. Check the target bitrate.

...oookkkk..

..if i may pick your brains further..

..so the original divx is on 1827, vdub is on 855, and the winavi xvid is on 2001..Gspot numbers

..there is no difference on computer monitor playback

..using a sharp dv-3106 and a 29 inch screen

..vdub..there is very slight blurring on rapidly moving objects, really only visible if you look for it, sound fine

..winavi..locks/hangs and skips

..original-divX doesn't play ..

..so i should increase the target bitrate ? to the original, or if i can to slightly less and so get smaller files ?

It depends on your objective. Lower bitrate, smaller files,
higher bitrate, bigger files (also better quality, up to a point).
What do you want ? Big or small files?
Some like to encode the file to exactly 699MB so they can fill a
CD. That's their criteria. What is yours?

Something else you can try, go back to the xvid config and
click on the target bitrate button. It should change to
target quantizer. Set it to "4" and try it that way. That sets
a constant quality on the encode, but the file size cannot be determined before hand. < That may or may not be an issue.
(The lower the Q number, the better the quality)

..the object is a smooth, relatively fast, reliable, pain-free translation fron divX to Xvid for those files that don't take the simple 4CC change, mostly of nandub origin, i have the impression..

..size should be around the same as the original, quality idem..

..winavi 8 will do it, reasonably quickly, but results vary..

Open the original avi in virtualdub and display file/information.
Take a look at the video bitrate.
Inside the xvid config screen, set the target bitrate that you just
saw. Then it should be pretty close in size.
