Hi there, Im using Emule/Overnet file sharing application . Because the downloading speed is slow , i disabled all firewalls used previously .Also , following instructions , i changed the setting on my router/modem (Ports ...). By doing these things , my computer is definitely exposed (unfirewalled) , so the download rate is improved much better . However , now I worried about my computer's security (hacker attacks...) (for something important such as loss of data or online purchase/transaction ....)
I am now half scared of hackers and half excited about the fast speed. Can you give me any advice ? Should i restore the previuos setting or am i too skeptical (coz a lot of unfirewalled users ,rite? )
Thanks in advance

Hello,
As long as you only open that 1 port for eMule/Overnet then you should be ok from hackers and that, if you open your computer right up so every port is passed to your computer, DMZ Mode, then you may have a problem. But by the sounds you need to relax a little :D

Plus hackers dont usually hack home users. If they are good they would go for bigger things like a bank or sumthing.

you mean i can open 1 port for Emule on my router .But it seems that i should open 2 ports instead of 1 only : they are 1 port for TCD and 1 for UDP . Is that right , Chooky ?

I often use KazaaLite (without doing anything for firewall or changing settings since it was installed ) to download some music . Its download rate is much more faster than Emule/ overnet .

Surely i know music sharing is muchmore speedy than movie , but clearly when you download music , Kazaa lite works faster than Overnet /emule.

i tried to use Shareazaa to share movies , but it is really horrible , Its layout
is the only good thing going for it , about downloading/ sharing , extremely sucks !

Thanks for your reply .

Hello,
Yeh I know it seems like you should open the UDP port to, but you really don't need to unless your router supports the different PORT eg. UDP TCP etc. If the router, such as mine, just allows you to open ports there is no UDP or TCP.
KaZaA is great for music we all know that, but little files are great to download everywhere pretty much. You will find eMule can download a mp3 the same as kazaa if it has alot of sources. Just like kazaa if there is not enough BANDWIDTH in kazaa the download will get a status of REMOTELY QUEUED. So it just depends on where u downloading from, all of these P2P sharing programs are as good as one another and as shitty as one another. :D eg. 1 might be easy to search but has no clients therefore not many files, where another P2P program may have shit program but have more clients eg. More popular and still building the program to make it better.

But any way, by rights you shouldnt use DMZ unless its pointing to a Server with a firewall on it then your computer is connected to that server. In the other case just need to open the port i discussed earlier. P2P programs are gonna always be different and its never ending.
