Here are the facts..

I have a modded Wii (d2pro).

I cannot play some PAL games (the screen goes black).

How am I able to play them? Do I have to install Wii Homebrew, and if so, do I have to wipe out my Zelda saved game for the twilight hack? Any help is appreciated.

If you have a modded wii, then you can install the homebrew channel with a iso, as long as you aren't on 3.3. look here for the iso. I don't know if the d2pro supports regino free or not... so as far as i know your two options would be to download errr... buy a copy of freeloader or install starfall off the homebrew channel. I have read one or two things saying that starfall has it's problems.... So I am not sure if you want to do that or not. Oh, also starfall only works on 3.2 so if you are on 3.3 then you will have to downgrade back to 3.2. Your last crazy option would be to find ntsc copies of the games that you want. I know that there is a ton more pal games out there, but I can almost always find the game that I want in ntsc.

I still play my wii, just not as much. Gave my PSP to my son.

How do I know if I have 3.3 or 3.2? I know that i have been upgrading when it said I needed to in order to play a game. I think I tried to install homebrew via DVD (ISO), and I remember that it messed up and went to a black screen or something. Also if I install homebrew channel is there a possibility that my Wii will get bricked? All info is appreciated.

check it under your wii settings... it should be in the top right corner of the screen.

What is freeloader (downloadable??)? What is the best route to go about doing this (it seems like there are lots of options)? I just do not want to use the twilight hack bc I do not want to lose my saved Zelda game.

you could still do the twilight hack without losing your game save. just copy your save to your sd card and then copy it to you computer before you replace it with the other one. put it back on your card - wii when you are done.
there are risks with putting the homebrew channel on, but I have not heard of anything bad happening.
have you tried to reconfig your d2pro? try downloading the utility disk here.
Freeloader is a disk that you can buy to play games from a different region without having a modded wii. you put it in and wait for lines to show up on the screen, then you put in your game from a different region. since you have a modchip, you don't have to have the real disk. There are plenty of torrents out there. just look for datel freeloader for the wii.

EDIT

if you use the homebrew channel, you can also use geckoOs. find out more here
