Hey guys, I was hoping maybe some of you could help me with a decision I am going to make. Basically, there is a guy I know that is selling his 80GB PS3 in good condition and all because the disc drive is "messed up" and doesnt read discs anymore. He says that it got messed up when he updated the PS3 firmware to 2.41, which I know basically bricked PS3s. He doesnt really know anything about these issues so he just bought another one.

He is giving it to me for $150 with GTA4. He says that everything is perfect, XMB is fully functional and it even reads music CDs and PS2 games perfectly. Based on what he is saying, I think it is a software issue and not a hardware issue. If the disc drive was really broken it wouldn't read any discs, and even when he puts a PS3 game in, it loads it into the XMB, but it just "hangs" when he starts it. Do you think this could probably be fixed by formatting the hard drive using a computer, which was the solution to 2.41 bricked PS3s? If so, ill be getting a 2nd 80GB PS3 with GTA4 for just $150. A hell of a deal. Thanks for your input.

In some of the newer ps3's the red laser and blue laser are seperate, its very common for one to go and not the other. Even so for 150 bucks if something goes wrong with your ps3 you would have a donor console already.

I actually purchased a broken ps3 over buying a new ps3. Prior to buying it it froze during gameplay. I have had it fixed yet because i have a busy schedule. I bought it off ebay for 50.00 and there is a tech that lives near me who said he could fix it costing 60-120$. I got the hdmi cable for 5.00$ the power cord for 5.00 both from ebay. I did however purchase the controller brand new form wal-mart because i knew i could play the demos. so after having for two weeks. I just play the demos cause I dont have time right now to get into a game. Saved me lot of money doing this way.

my ps3 makes my patience stronger.

Thanks for your responses, but what do you guys think might be wrong with the PS3. Everything works flawless, except playing PS3 discs (not sure about bluray movies). And even then, the XMB still loads them up and the disc drive spins them and everything. The problem is that when you start the game it hangs and freezes. What do you think?

if the hdd went out it an easy thing to fix! It nothing more than a sata 2.5 laptop hard rive... pick your size it won't matter! As far as the games go, have you tried to see if any new firmware updates are available? If it doesn't let you download get a jump / flash drive and format it with fat 32 and put it on this, and load it up from the main screen to see if it will fix it. I'm not sure if the laser is gone so if you have an audio disc cleaner, a CD with bristles on it, put that in and see if it does the trick. If your feeling brave crack open that case run the unit and see for yourself.

Everyone is right.. I guess you will have to try it yourself to see that it isnt as easy as formatting the HDD and bam it works.. Trust me if there is no warranty you WILL have to spend 150 bucks for sony to fix it. So actually you are spending 300 bucks on a broken ps3.. its not bricked.. its partially bricked. Bricked would be totally broke, no DISC plays,No xmb, basically locked up!.. why not take your 300 bucks and put it toward a new ps3...

No offense but isn't that the mistake anyways?... you do not want to format it; not from a PC standpoint. By doing so it may cause the PS3 to look for an os that in fact isn't on the drive.
