Hello, I'm trying to figure out the best route to getting my ps2 to play backups. Unfortunately, there is a lot of information and I'm starting to get confused.

What I have:
- old, fat ps2
- another old, fat ps2 with a network adapter installed for ff11 (so I guess there's a 40gb hdd inside or something?)
- an additional regular IDE 160gb hdd
- 150gb usb Maxtor hard drive, requiring 2 usb ports, one for data xfer and one for power

Now what I want to know is, what is the cheapest/cleanest way of playing backups on the ps2?

From what I understand, there's a way to run homebrew software off of a memory card. Is there some way for me to do this and run games either off of an IDE hard drive or my flash drive without buying some sort of swap disc?
