Downloaded serveral movies from Limewire. AVI,MPG,etc. Used Nero Vision to copy files form hard drive to DVD drive. Waited 2.75 hours to find out the file was too big to burn to disk.

Don't understand. DVD holds 4.7gigs

Nero Vision generally gives a warning when the running time is too large for the disk.It does this before the conversion stage.
If it does give a warning you can change the disk size to DVD-9 and output the files to the hard drive, then open the converted files in 'DVD Shrink' and let it fit and burn them to the DVD-5.
