I currently have my xbox 360 tied into my home network. I have xvid videos on my ms home server and i have played one xvid movie bt all others won't play, I get an error stating that either an audio or video codec is not supported. I have put the other videos into g-spot software to discover the differences and they are all xvid with some differences in the audio type or video type. what gives ??? is there only a specific type of xvid that is supported???

I had same message but I downloaded from XBox Live the Codec video pack (will say its already been downloaded to your machine) and it sorted the problem!

Hmmm... I don't think i have downloads the codec pack. Do you download that from within the xbox 360 or download onto pc and burn to disk?

well then you must be living under a rock for the last year as this was in the last major dash update.

sign into LIVE, try to play the file and it will ask you to download it there. however, i believe you have to be connected to LIVE at all times to watch xvid files. i know theres a way of 'putting' the codec onto the HD of the 360 but its a little time consuming and all. if you wish to go that route, then just do a search on here for it.

ok, I thought it was different for the update, you didn't say it was an update, you said it was a codec pack. I have played xvid videos bt some don't work. just looking a solution.

huh?

xvid support was released with the last dashboard update, however, you still need the correct codecs to play it i believe.

well if that is the case, where do i find these codecs for the xbox 360? what i have found so far is that it will only play xvid video files if incoded with Xvid 1.1.2 final

I found it easier to just convert the video files to WMV forma tand put them on a usb stick drive and plug it into the 360. the videos play from the usb drive (must be fat32) U just stick it in the front usb port, i guess the back would work too. Go to the blade with the video picrures music etc and select video tab, change source to portable device and play ur videos. i did this lastnight, i downloaded some tv shows in AVI format and converted them to WMV with Winavi. works like a dream!! forget all thatnetworking steaming bs cause its too much trouble, usb does require conversion and for u to physically plug it in but its still easier and less headaches.

thats what i used to do, but now that stopped working for me even, dont know why, it would start to play the file, and then say some stupid error and not play it anymore, so now i just burn them all to dvds.

here is a solution i found and it works.

You could use a program like "VIRTUALDUB" (free) which you can convert to whatever codec you want including DIVX or XVID.

http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/

Its pretty easy to use but id say you will need to read up a little bit.
Really all you have to do is open any file you want to convert from old DIVX to new DIVX in virtua dub.

Then choose FULL PROCESSING mode from the Video menu and choose COMPRESSION.. Make sure you choose the codec you want.. eg XVID or DIVX 5.11 etc etc..

Check to make sure that AUDIO options are set to: DIRECT STREAM COPY.

Then choose save as and give your pc a few minutes to convert.

I had used the above method and converted a xvid that didn't work to a working xvid. this will do for now.
