There is currently a new virus spreading the dumber irc users that advertises a supposed speed-up program. When infected, the victim client will message anyone who joins the channel you are on, posing as an IRCop or admin, encouraging them to follow a link to this supposed speed-up program which is actually a virus. I don't know exactly what other adverse effects the virus has, but regardless, heed this advice TKO: Never, ever, ever follow a link that is sent to you immediately upon entering a channel, especially to an .exe file like the one you are referring to, as it usually a virus infected user client trying to spread the virus to you. Sometimes you will get one of these "onjoin" messages from an operator, but it will usually contain only helpful information about the channel and no links.

I have never accept http://www etc in the settings in IRC.
Accept DCC from friends only , all common sense things really...

Also, widespread viruses of this type are usually warned about in the server window with a global message when you connect, just as a heads up from the network operators.

Edit: Some examples from the Addictz network where #ad_buddies is hosted:

*Global* [dns] There has been recent URL virus link spams referring to: mIRC 6.13 upgrade, Microsoft Windows Update, Computer Speed Up, RPC3 Dcom patch, invision new release. if you receive these links, please DO NOT click them, it is a virus of course, if you have already clicked the link, please :google for a virus removal solution. Thank You

i beleive the one TKo is talking about is a trojan
