Adobe is a well trusted name, and if you got the free pdf reader from a trusted source then your ok. Just out of curiosity... you are letting it install completely aren't you? or is it installing each and every time regardless? If it's the latter you need to uninstall it then run a cleaner like CCleaner (it's a freebie) then make a full system restart and then source the current version of that reader from the Adobe website.

Cheers.

PS: (off topic...sorry mods)

If reader has installed completely before you shut down, but then wants to re-install afterwards at some point, is it an update that it's installing you think? Sounds silly, but it is worth asking.
Just in case we have our wire crossed at some point, let's recap on what to do next if the above is not what's happening.
Now that you have ccleaner..

1. Open cleaner and hit the tools button and uninstall reader.
2. With cleaner still open, hit the registry button and scan and hit fix the selected items button. Follow the further prompts to backup your registry and comply with all.
3. Make a full PC restart
4. Visit Adobe and get the reader and install.
5. Open reader and check for updates...

Does reader gather updates and install or is there another message you get? (eg. non available)
Is all working well after these efforts? are we any closer buddy?

Cheers.
