ok here it is in a nut shell
i been burning wii games a lot onto a spindle of bulkpaq dvd-r
now the first ones i burnt work perfectly
then at some point they stoped working right but there are some wierd things that mean i cant work out why
so heres the details
i use imgburn to burn at 2.4x and verification is on (every image based verification
my drive is a pioneer 112d (i had firmware 1.22)

theorys;
1)ok as i say all discs were from the same spindle,but i got it into my head that maybe there was a bad batch at the botom so i checked the disc code on the rim of the data side (if that makes sense) there identicle in some cases to the ones that work different in others but no pattern

2)a friend said maybe i should try my drives latest firmware so i did (reseting the pc afterwards) and now my drive is on the 124 (latest from official site dated something december 2007) burnt another one and it wont read

3)my drive is fubar, to test this i place a burned disc from the non working stack into my second drive (a samsung with kron firmware(my 360 ripping drive)) and did a verification it matched the iso so now im really confused

my wii;
pal
firmware 3.3e
d2sunv3 chip (solderless)
the error;
lets take metriod prime3 as our example
i insert it into my wii
in the disc channel it shows the game (does the little animation thingie)
you start the game
get the health warning strap instructions (ie do not trash your flat etc)
it says loading then tells me the disc cannot be read and consult my manual (do you know that manual has no trouble shooting guide for backup games? wierd)
most are like that with a few exeptions ie they cant read cutscenes or the like but all the same error

im stumped so what do you guys think could be the problem?

You are using crap discs. Try higher quality brands such as Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden- both with a max speed of 8X. Burn with ImgBurn at 4X speed. Don't bother with the verification.

thats what i thought at first but as i say discs from the same spindle are working fine

having said that i tried two of my dual layer discs for supersmashbros

datawrite titanium dvd+r DL = failed

bulkpaq dvd+r DL = success though took ages to load

both burned in the same manor

seems wierd though that some media from the same spindle (with the same ident code) would work and some not

as a further test im trying a disc from the spindle that was going wrong into my old server pc burner on my linux pc (wont prove anything if it dont work (too many different factors) but if it do work it will point squarly at the burner)

and i found an old vert disc thats blank and scratch free so im try ing that in my main pc

(isnt wonderful the lengths we go through to try todiagnose a problem)

*personly i think its that evil securom that spore installed !*..actualy joking aside it may be O_O

sorry for the double post but i cant see where to edit

ok the disc in the server pc failed (the drive hasnt been used for over a year so i wasnt shocked)

the vert failed to verify too (again it was a little blank disc sitting in a draw for ages so not too shocked)

do you really think its just the media? i mean 2morro i will pop into maplins and get a vert disc or two to try out

asecond attempt with the succesful DL disc got a disc read error where there wasnt one before (i ejected it and reinserted it and it carried on fine) man this is wierd

It sounds like your wii's drive pot settings need to be changed.

Or the drive could be going out.

or the iso is a dud there are lots of duds.

taken your advice and ordered http://www.bigpockets.co.uk/product.php?product=DATASAF095 which is a pack of 100 Taiyo Yuden
fingers crossed

in the interests of possibly helping others the media im currently using (not the one listed above that im waiting for) is;
bulkpaq
the discs are yellow and havegeneration 4 8xspeedmax written on them
img burn has this on the ones that worked;

not sure if that helps anybody put thees no such thing as too much info lol

i also we backedup a 360 game (using the kron drive to read and the suspect dvd writer to well write.
the backup worked flawlessly and had extensive testing

about the POT settings, totaly new concept to me but i did a lot of searching online and found the method etc though my searches seemed to suggest this is only really to allow dual layer media compatabilitie to be increased, and since it involved something called a multimeter(man i wish i coul spell) and the chance to fry the drive im gonna pass lol but the reply was appreciated

the wii drive in question is brand new as of wednesday just gone i guess i could of damaged it when i opened it but im optimistic thats not the case

****edit number two***
on my way to work i brought a pack of 25 verbatims (manufactor id MCC 03RG20) so far burnt one disc (the same one i used for testing with the different drive etc above) write speed 2.4 the wii read it past where it normaly says bad disc and it apears succesful (dont have time to fully test tonight)

now i just got to hope the pack of 100 Taiyo Yuden are as good a quality as the verbatims (given that i paid £10 for 25 verbatims and the pack of 100 Taiyo Yuden was only £19.99 im guessing they are not going to be as good :( )

ok new post as the other is getting long and since no one can see that its being edited(its droping off the forum im unlikely to get advice and help)

first up heres what imgburn says about these verbatims

PIONEER DVD-RW  DVR-112D 1.24 (ATA)

Current Profile: DVD-R

Disc Information:
Status: Empty
Erasable: No
Free Sectors: 2,298,496
Free Space: 4,707,319,808 bytes
Free Time: 510:48:46 (MM:SS:FF)
Supported Write Speeds: 4x, 6x, 8x, 12x, 16x, 18x

Pre-recorded Information:
Manufacturer ID: MCC 03RG20

Recording Management Area Information:
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-112D

now i did a second disc (burnt across the network on windows pc using imgburn) and my serverpc (also my file storage device and a ubuntu system) was busy so during the burn the buffer failed a few times ie;

W 02:07:57 Waiting for buffers to recover... (LBA: 100512)

W 02:08:13 Waiting for hard disk activity to reach threshold level...

the verification passed though
i did get a disc error but i was able to eject and disc reinsert it and the game carried on this was on the intro to the game so i tried the disc (from the menu having ejected it and shut down the wii before hand each time ) three times in a row, two of those times the error poped up again one time it didnt
so heres my questions
1) i note that the slowest write speed supported is 4x does that mean if i burn at 2.4x i could be causing problems?
2) would the errors quoted above have a bearing on the quality of the burn ie are they the reason im getting the odd disc error on this second disc

as always any advice theorys tips etc is greatfully recieved

I was experiencing similiar problems with intermittent readable back-ups where I would have to eject the disc and re-insert 2-3 times to get it to load. older known good working back-ups were unaffected, only the new burns were problematic. Eventually The Wii was unable to recognize the newly burned disc at all. Today I bought a new burner and the new burns are working on first insert. the old burners were both Samsung, the new is LG.

Even if you select 2.4x in imgbrn, if you watch the burn speed it will still be at 4x, or lowest writable speed if higher than what you have selected.

yeah at first i thought it was my drive but i did a 360 game and tested it thoughly no problems

i have burned a third disc
this time at 4x
from the same machine as the burner
no buffer errors or harddisc threshhold

game worked perfectly with no unreadable bits at all (so far)

now i need to work out if burning across the network fudged number 2 or if it was the threshold thing ...my votes the latter so im burning one across the network and will edit this post with its success or failure

****edit*****
ok the disc worked fine so it seems it really was just the media :) (and of course the busynes of the server pc)

hope the info in this thread help others too

ok new post as new problems

games are starting to give the disc read error again (not all games but the recent burned ones and originals! if i disable my chip it seems it cant even read originals! (comes up as a question mark) so im thinking that my brand new wii has a faulty drive
any ideas?

when opening the wii up to check for lose cables the wii clip fell off i reattached and tested, all games (including the dud discs from the other night) now load and work

it shouldnt of been that but so far fingers crossed
