Hi, i've bought a second hand psp for my son from the boot sale... it is psp1003 the firmware is 2.81 has 32mb card and 1 game (have ordered charger from ebay i already have a usb that fits it... i am a little baffled as to what is the difference with homebrew and firmware ...could anyone tell me how to go about updating it so i can play backup games?? i am getting some games given but they are all backups.. is it right that i will have to put an origonal game in first before the backup will play??(once it is modded to play backups of course)

i am also thinking of buying a 8gb memory card... are games better on the memory card is on discs?? is it easy to play movies from a memory card?? (are they mp4 movies?)

i don't really know anything about psp so any help offered will be great...

thanks
Mandy

After upgrading to custom firmware you can run games directly from the memory card without a game disk inserted.

(are games better on the memory card is on discs??) As far as I know you cannot backup games on a UMD disk, I think you were missinformed.

The stickies at the top explain a lot you really need to read them and then ask any questions you might have.

there are 2 options you have

1) GTA LCS downgrade then upgrade to cfw (takes a while but very simple)

http://www.neowin.net/forum/index.php?s=...#entry588271384
(3.03 -> 1.50)

then once your on 1.50 its just a simple as update to 3.52M33-4 and then to a newer cfw such as 3.90m33 or 4.01m33

or option2

2) pandoras battery.

this is a one step process but i find setting it up can be a pain in the ass.

if you know someone with a ready modded psp then this is the best option for you

guide with cfw psp -> http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/610312

or

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/580254 <- my personal fave

if you dont know someone with a cfw psp you can still use this option just you ether have to hardmod the battery (cut a pin to allow it to go into service mode) or buy a ready made one (datel tool battery)

and then use this guide

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/610313

______________________________________________________

im guessing that all sounds very complicated but it is worth it in the end

to quickly explain pandoras battery so its easier to understand; its basicly a way of by passing sonys homebrew check and allows you to install cfw via sony service mode

please feel free to ask any questions

Hi dr1ver thx for all the info.. i will have a read through it.. think i might go for option 1 if it's easier... do you know if i will be able to play backup discs on the psp?? i'm gettin given 5 and i think there is supposed to be between 4-7 games on each.. i'll have to wait till the charger is delivered before i can try and change the firmware coz i'm unsure how much battery is left and don't want it to run out half way through

thank you

yep yep iso is the correct format ill come to them latter after you've installed custom firmware other wise you'll likely get confused with everything as there is load of stuff you have to do.

if you go with option 1 you need to have a unpatched version of GTA LCS (should not have a update for 2.81 + on the disc)

if you do then go ahead and continue with the guide once you get the charger.

if not the i would suggest buying one (second hand as it will likely be unpatched) but then i would suggest buying a pandoras battery set which is ready to go as it would save a lot of time.

so im going to throw in a 3rd option as well now. you could buy a magic memory stick and pandoras battery that are ready to install 3.90m33-3 onto your psp

you can get it from here -> www.bargainpile.net/ but the site is down for me at the mo so you may have better luck it should be pandoras battery set v5 that you need to look for on there and its about £25.

hope that information helps (^_^)

yer it is the game.

reason for it being needed is that there is a exploit with the gamesave.

this then allow you to run a update that is 1.50 so its a basic downgrade

First of all firmware is like what version your psp is with different firmwares the psp has different features. Homebrew is completely different then firmware, homebrew is a piece of software made from someone other than sony designed to run on the psp. Normaly with any psp that has a firmware that isnt 1.50 or 1.00 or a custom firmware ( a firmware made by someone other than sony ) cant run homebrew games and apps. So you would need to downgrade your sons psp if you wanted to run homebrew. Hope this helps

you need a memory stick that is at least 512mb but not bigger than 2gb.

try this memory stick
