Audio problems in DVD Studio Pro

I have some .avi files that I downloaded that seem to work in DVD Studio Pro and then I have other .avi files that I downloaded that will not work in DVD Studio Pro. I am simply trying to take these .avi files, convert them into VIDEO_TS/AUDIO_TS files and burn them on a DVD. Seems like it ought to be simple but I have not got it to work yet.

I have tried using ffmpegx to convert the files to different types of audio files, AC3, MP3, etc. but I can never get the audio to play. Generally, the video runs just fine.

What am I doing wrong?? What are the settings in ffmpegx that I need to do this?? Or what other program can I use to take these .avi and/or .mov files which play fine in Quicktime but will not play DVD Studio Pro. Once again, it's the audio that usually will not work, the video usually plays just fine.

I have been reading everywhere, trying different things, etc. for about 3 weeks now. Someone give me a break, please.
