Hey everyone,
My xbox 360 I got since launch just got its RROD for the very first time. I decided to take out the cpu and gpu heatsink so i can clean the surface with alcohol. Now that the gpu and cpu surface is shiny and i can actually see my own reflection in it, I realized that i dont have any of that heatsink cream/paste. So then i just put the metal heatsink back on the cpu and gpu then clamped it tight onto the motherboard.
Now when i startup my xbox, the RROD are gone and the green lights flash for 3 seconds but then 2 red lights start to flash meaning that it has overheat. So now im wondering if it will work if i go out and buy some of that heatsink paste to put on my cpu and gpu? Does the cpu actually overheat in 5 seconds without heatsink?
Also, does anyone know the reason behind the xclamp method? I mean if the circuits in the gpu are already destroyed, why does pressing it down the the motherboard with greater force make it work again?

Thanks

If its any thing like a normal computer CPU... then yes it will and you'll only be seriously killing its life span!

You really should not switch it on again without putting some thermal conducting paste on it, because you could do some serious damage!

Im sure you will be able to pick up a tube cheap off ebay... its not hard to get hold of :)

hope this helps mate,

Or if you have a local Radio Shack.

im going to go to radio shack later to get some heatsink paste.
I already turned it on like 8 times without the paste on it. 7 times i turned it off after 5 seconds and there was one time when i let it stay on for 2 minutes. I thought it would be the same as doing the towel trick.
Is it already too late to save my 360?

Get Artic Silver 5, and please don't turn on your console again until you use some thermal compound on the cpu and gpu..

if the xclamp fix works then that means ur circuits and gpu arent destroyed but just bad solder/board warping and the xclamp applies proper pressure to the board so the gpu doesnt become displaced after it gets so hot and solder melts.

but since u have been stupid and turned ur system on without any thermal compound NOW your chip may be fried. That was very dumb dude, not trying to be an ass but it was sorry. I mean if you took ur car to a mechanic would u expect them to give it back to you with all the much needed fluids drained and expect it to not blow up?
if your chip isnt fried already it is most likely damaged and u may see screwed up graphics like tearing on the srceen, if that is the case then your gpu is trash and u need a new system :(

But then I tried the towel method and it worked again. I played Forza 2 for 20mins and it was fine. So now i bought a nyko intercooler and a 80mm cpu fan powered by an external adapter to put on top of the gpu. I run the 360 with the top opened and the cpu/gpu feels pretty cool by touch.
But then the thing is so loud that it feels like im sitting in a car going 100mph with all the windows down.
