I recently bought a ps3 for bluray. I have a Sharp Aquos 1080p and a Pioneer Elite 74. Im running an optical for the sound and the HDMI for the video. It works great except when I try to play dvds like Crank which has uncompressed sound. My receiver is 7.1 and when i run an HDMI through it from the ps3 to the tv, no sound or video at all. My question is: Should i upgrade to the Pioneer 94 which has 1080p upgrade conversion through the HDMI? or is there a way to get the new audio codecs (hd.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DTS-HD or Dolby True) to work? I played Day after Tomorrow and that cranked but i still feel im not getting the new audio to work through my sorta dated Pioneer Elite. Thanks in advance

All you're going to get from optical is regular DD and DTS. To hear the new HD audio formats, with a PS3, you'll need a receiver that can handle the HD audio over HDMI.

You can do that much cheaper than with the Pioneer 94 you mentioned. See this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-TX-SR805-Cha...22914520&sr=1-3
You can do it even cheaper, with the Onkyo TX-SR606. It's less than $400.

If you get a blu ray player with 5.1/7.1 analog outputs, and if your receiver has 5.1/7.1 analog inputs (multi-channel), you can get them that way. Some players don't decode dtsHD MA internally though. The Sony BDP-S301 will, with a firmware update which is available, if I remember correctly. Sam's Club has the BDP-S301 for $217 and change.

Speaking of a Pioneer 1018.....
I got a sony 1080p LcoS kds-r70xbr2.....yam 5150 receiver 8 yrs old, but works like a champ. ps3...oppo dvd, cable HD dvr. Ok, toying with pioneer 1018, HK 354.....still open to suggestions..... I want the new lossless audio codecs, and my receiver doesn't do HDMI. $500 - a grand. My issues......I don't think any video upscaling is important because of my tv, and hdmi can't upscale any more than it is.......I would love a nice on screen display not just for set-up.......I mean onscreen on my tv........a usb would be terrific.......and above all...I want to be blown away by the new lossless audio the way I was blown away by HD......got your thinking cap on.....
