Ok dig, I'm not a newbie to converting but I'm having a weird problem using VirtualDub. I'm trying to get my DVDRips as good a quality as aXXo and I'm not happy with the results of some of the stuff I have...(TMPGE Express, AVS Converter) so I want to use VirtualDub-MPEG to shrink down the movie with more control.
Here is the build up to the problem, and I'm sure it's something in VirtualDub that I'm missing...
I have taken my original movie (6 something gigs) and stripped the main movie and audio with DVD Shrink after ripping it to the hard drive using DVD Decryptor with AnyDVD running in the background. That brings the whole thing down to 4 gigs.
I converted the .vob files with either VOB2MPEG or AVS Converter and loaded them into VirtualDub-Mpeg.
I am choosing direct stream for my audio and full conversion for the video.
I chose XVid (and I have the latest version)

High Definition as the Profile Level
Single Pass
Bitrate calculated for a 716800 file size
29.97 rate
955 bitrate for video
Audio MP3 CDR @ 128 kbps

I chose full compression
Save as AVI
and blewy!
Not even halfway through the conversion the avi was 2 something gigs.
Now... that's way higher than 716800mb as was calculated for XViD to use.
Can anyone catch what I'm missing?

Found the answer to my own question. Seems it takes a bit of expirimentation to get it perfect.
Here's a link that can help anyone having a problem like mine.

I was going to suggest that the audio was the problem inasmuch as you said 'direct stream':I saw it in my case where the audio was 6 channels and the file would not shrink until it was converted to MP3.
