As the subject suggests, I have three games that I am pretty interested in playing, but all three require a hardware update from the respective discs. As I own a (US) system, I would rather not update my firmware with a Japanese disc. Does anyone know if the update(s) contained on these discs share a commonality, or if there is another US software title that I could use in place of them to update my system before playing the aforementioned Japanese games?

I have thought a bit about just getting the US version of Wario Land Shake It, as it might have the same update (though for US systems) as the Japanese version.

Any insight into this matter would be greatly appreciated.

On a side note, do the PS3 and XBOX 360 require software-based hardware updates like this? I find it kind of annoying, in a global society where companies should expect consumers to buy products form outside of their own country. The Wii really needed to be non-region coded.
