'Blocky' .avi playback since PC upgrade

I recently had to buy a new pc after my old one died,
I have always downloaded movies from a certain uploader (the one with a's,x's &o's in the name),
before when i was using XP and Windows media player these .avi divx file played fine also when i transferred them to my memory stick to play on my dvd player they were perfect.
?However, this new PC (vista) the divx.avi file dont play at all well, they are very blocky, like when Sky TV gets poor signal, i thought it was the new media player causing it, but when i burned it to disc the result was the same. could someone please instruct me what to do to rectify the problem, i know its not a dodgy copy because a**o's copys are always spot on!
