Samsung to Samsung DVD drive Help?

I'm mostly a relative noob to all of this but after several days worth of scouring the internet for information I've been able to roughly define and all but find a solution..

I recently got what some call The "white screen of death".. After many problems with disc read errors I finally found my 360 incapable of reading anything other than dvd's and cd's, I tried EVERY game I had including a brand new unscathed copy of GTA 4 I purchased not to long ago..

the problem happened when trying to watch a dvd and apparently the xbox had a problem getting past a certain part, most likely due to a smudge or scratch on the disc. anywho after looking up the problem online and calling microsoft they basically told me either my laser or the dvd drive needed replacement or repair, and since my warranty was up I took on the problem myself instead of shelling out the hundred bucks..

I'm about to swap the Samsung drive I currently have with a new samsung and have found several tutorials that say simply to swap the PCB key and I'm set, no flashing required.. But I want to know if thats it, and after watching a tut vid I want to know if I just swap the key and none of the cables, (the vid suggests I swap key AND laser cable)

also the final question I want to know is A: is it easier and better to just swap lasers? and B: will this get me booted off xbox live because it could be seen as a mod??

What are you going on about?.. If the laser needs replacing they cost @ £14.. To swap the drive (remembering the fault may be in the drive electronics) will mean flashing the drive with the key from your original drive.. the "key" is a string of numbers in the firmware, not a physical thing.
You can swap the drive board.. but samsung drives are so easy to flash I would do that instead.. because it sounds very much like the problem is on the drive board rather than the laser.

Posting in the 360 section would have helped..
