Lurked here for many years, but never needed to post and while this may come over as quite a n00b question I've been ripping for years with much success under Windows.
Ok here goes...
I have a MASSIVE DVD collection, all originals so there's no piracy here, but I would like to rip them in to a manageable format to be stored on my NAS for playback over the network through my Mac Mini via Plex or the like plugged in to my TV (DVI to HDMI + Optical Out to my 5.1 Amp). I've been experimenting with various ways but i've not found a defacto way of doing this.
What I really want to do is rip the full DVD to the HDD, rip just the movie out and keep English subs for the times when they are needed, then compress the movie down to 1 - 1.5GB file size while keeping the DD or DTS sound track (which ever is available)
My dilema is making the rip/compress, while keeping the subs (maybe as a separate file) and preserving the 5.1 sound track...
Are there any guides out there that go through this process for this purpose? I.e making the compressed file with the 5.1 track and extracting the subs at the same time, also is this something Plex will support (having external subs)?
Sorry if this has been gone over before, but I just don't see anything like what I am after.
