Can't install java (windows XP w/ SP3)

Whenever I click on the installer app, it'll pop-up a window with a progress bar, which won't move for a couple minutes and then show me an error message saying that there was a mistake when applying transformations or something like that. Java's support says they don't know what causes this. I've heard the SP3 caused trouble to install java, but also heard some people managed to get it done. Any tips?
