did the xclamp fix 3months ago now the rrod are back,i tightened the screws further after applying artic silver.but one screw on the gpu must have been to tight as it sheard the thread ot the heatsink,i tihgened it a bit,and the other three screws are tight,now when turning the box on the fans sound like there on 100% really loud,now its freezing,should i bin it,
it is very sensitive.. loosen all the screws and re tighten each one a little at a time.. kinda like how you tighten lugs on your car... sometimes you have to mess with it for a while and eventually you will get it.. just be patient...
He said he stripped one. Retightening won't help that.
The fan kicks on high when the console overheats. And that's exactly what's happening. With only 3 screws properly tightened, there's uneven pressure from the heatsink on the gpu. That uneven pressure means there's uneven contact and improper heat transfer.
I know just how to fix this. Just loosen the other screws a bit, and add a nylon washer to the stripped one. It will work, just loosen and tighten until good. Just as a warning depending on how long you kept it like that you could have fried the chip. So that might suck. Also the Artic Silver might have went all over the place due to the lack of tightness on the one end. Sounds bad. But if you haven't played it much you'll be fine. All I know is that stuff, A.S., if it went everywhere, possibly on another chip or anything, you might be screwed. Pack it and buy a new one. ~Sorry~
PS: Next time slowly tighten the bolts. I mean in every tut is says to make them snug, not real tight.
if it truly is stripped there is no untightening/retightening because thats just it its stripped. you would have to possible drill a bigger thread the heatsink and all that good stuff, but doing that one will still cause uneven pressure, i would think anyway. you might be able to buy an aftermarket heatsink, which would work better, and buy four new screws and start all the way over. i guess it just depends really on how bad you screwed it up.
