Adding subtitles to a movie- how can i do it?

Hi there

I would like to backup a dvd movie to dvd-r, but the the copy of the movie that i have doesn't have subtitles in my language. my questions are:

1. Is there an easy way to do it?
2. is backing up a movie after adding subtitles to it considered piracy?
